French get revenge for 2008 relay loss to US

LONDON (AP) ? Ryan Lochte grabbed at the edge of the pool, head down, staring at the water. Michael Phelps glared at the scoreboard, trying to digest the first silver medal of his Olympic career.

Right beside them, the French celebrated.

It was just like 2008 but with the roles reversed.

This time, it was France chasing down the United States ? and Lochte, no less ? to win another riveting relay at the Olympics.

"We got our revenge," French swimmer Clement Lefert said.

With Phelps looking much stronger than he did the night before, the Americans built a commanding lead over the first three legs of the 4x100-meter freestyle relay Sunday and never really had to worry about the defending world champions from Australia.

When Lochte dove into the water on the anchor leg, he was a half-body length ahead of the field and looking to add another gold to his dominating victory Saturday in the 400 individual medley.

Not so fast.

Or, should we say, not fast enough.

Yannick Agnel, playing the chaser role that Jason Lezak did for the Americans four years ago in this same event, sliced through the water and was right on Lochte's shoulder as they made the flip at the far end of the pool. With about 25 meters to go, they were stroke for stroke. But Lochte, who had already competed in 1,200 meters of racing over the first two days, simply didn't have enough left to hold off the towering, 20-year-old Frenchman, one of the sport's real rising stars.

"I gave everything in the last 50 until he cracked," Agnel said. "In the last 10 meters, I saw that he was really cracking."

Agnel touched in 3 minutes, 9.93 seconds, having gone exactly 1 second faster than Lochte over the last two laps. Lochte and the Americans dropped to silver in 3:10.38, while Australia ? the favorite ? didn't even get a medal. Russia took the bronze in 3:11.41, edging the team from Down Under by 0.22.

Phelps settled for his 17th career medal and completed his collection of Olympic colors, adding a silver to his 14 golds and two bronzes. He also moved a step closer to becoming the most decorated Olympian ever, just one away from tying the mark for most career medals held by Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina, and has five events to go.

"At least I'm in a medal today," Phelps said ruefully, referring to a fourth-place finish in his first race of the London Games.

But silver was a bitter disappointment for the Americans, who know how the French felt four years ago.

France had the lead in Beijing and its best sprinter, Alain Bernard, going out on the final leg. But Lezak swam the fastest relay leg in history, drafting Bernard along the lane rope and beating him by a scant 0.08 seconds to keep Phelps on track for his record eight gold medals.

That was one of the greatest races in Olympic history.

This one wasn't too shabby, either.

"I was just really excited and I think I overswam the first 50 and it hurt me for the last 50," Lochte said. "But we were able to get a medal, so I guess that's good."

Lochte's reaction was much different than the one he had the night before, when he finished more than 3 seconds ahead of the other medalists and more than 4 seconds ahead of Phelps in the 400 IM.

Even though Phelps got a medal this time, he didn't look much happier. He lingered at the edge of the pool right above Lochte, before going over to congratulate the French.

Phelps put up the fastest time among the American swimmers, covering the second 100 in 47.15 and showing he still intends to be a force at these games after his disappointing start. Nathan Adrian swam the leadoff leg in 47.89, going out faster than Australian star James "The Missile" Magnussen to give the U.S. an early lead. Cullen Jones was solid, too, in the third spot (47.60).

Lochte was handed a lead of more than a half-second, but he couldn't hold it. Agnel covered the final leg in 46.74, while Lochte labored home in 47.74.

Agnel's anchor wasn't quite as spectacular as Lezak's 46.06 at Beijing, but the French had no complaints.

"It's magical, simply magical," Agnel said. "We didn't have too much pressure. We did what we know how to do. Now, Olympic champions. It's brilliant."

They climbed to top step of the podium to receive their medals, looking down at the Americans.

"It's tough," Phelps said. "We'd like to be on top, but Yannick has been swimming well all year and those guys put together a great relay. We tried to get ourselves into as much open water as we could. We had four great guys to get up there and swam as fast as we could. We were the ones that the coaches thought were going to have the best shot. We went out there and raced. That's all you can ask."

The U.S. coaches will surely come under scrutiny for going with Lochte, who had little experience in the 100 free and had never competed on this relay at the Olympics. But, coming off his dominant showing the first night, it's hard to argue about going with a swimmer who appeared to have the hottest hand of all.

"The 100 free, I don't really swim it. I haven't swum it in a long time," Lochte said. "You would think doing distance events, I wouldn't get tired. But sprinting takes a lot out of you."

In an interesting twist, Bernard will get a gold medal even though he didn't swim the final. Amaury Leveaux and Fabien Gilot took the first two legs, but Bernard will be rewarded, too, for taking part in the morning prelims. Maybe that will soothe some bitter feelings from four years ago.

Two more world records fell earlier in the evening.

American Dana Vollmer took down the mark in the 100 butterfly, then Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa broke another in the 100 breaststroke ? denying Japan's Kosuke Kitajima an Olympic threepeat.

Not even through the second night of the London Games, three world records had already been set.

So much for those dire predictions of marks standing for decades after high-tech bodysuits were banned.

This was quite a night for France, and not just because of the relay. Camille Muffat won a riveting 400 freestyle duel with American Allison Schmitt, the two virtually stroke for stroke the entire way. Muffat held on to win by about half a stroke with an Olympic-record time, while Schmitt settled for silver ? a sign of things to come.

Britain's Rebecca Adlington brought out the biggest cheer when she touched third, the home country's first swimming medal of the games.

Vollmer was third at the turn but powered to the wall for a time of 55.98, beating the record of 56.06 set by Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom at the 2009 world championships. Not bad for someone who didn't even qualify for the last Olympics, her career sidetracked by injuries and illness.

"I kept telling myself that my strength is my second 50," Vollmer said. "I kept really calm."

She dropped back her head when saw the time, then broke into a huge smile, slapped the water and pumped her fists.

"I'm on top of the world right now," said Vollmer, who qualified for Athens as a 16-year-old but was a disappointment in 2008. "I still know I can go faster."

Kitajima was trying to become the first male swimmer to win the same race at three straight Olympics. But, like Phelps the night before in the 400 IM, the Japanese star didn't come close.

Van der Burgh made sure of that, dominating the race almost as soon as his head popped out of the water for the first time. He was comfortably ahead at the turn and blew away the field on the return lap to touch in 58.46, knocking off another of the marks set at the 2009 world championships.

Brenton Rickard's time of 58.58 was among the astonishing 43 world records established at that meet in Rome, when rubberized suits took the sport to times that bordered on absurd. The suits have since been banned, with some predicting that it might take decades to go faster in textile suits.

Only two records fell at last year's worlds in Shanghai, but the Olympic meet has already beaten that number with three over the first two days.

Australia's Christian Sprenger took the silver in 58.93, and American Brendan Hansen claimed bronze in 59.49, providing a bit of salve for past Olympic disappointments. Hansen was so disgusted with his performance in Beijing that he retired from the sport, saying he was totally burned out. After giving triathlons a try, he returned to the pool and got back up to speed.

"That's as fast as I can go right now, and I'm really pleased with the outcome," Hansen said.

Kitajima didn't find the speed he needed, struggling home in fifth at 59.79. The night before, Phelps failed in his bid to win a third straight 400 IM title, fading to fourth while Lochte took gold with a dominating performance.

Van der Burgh propped himself on the lane rope, his chest heaving up and down, his hands cupped behind his head, a big smile on his face. He looked up toward the roof and pointed, a nod to his good friend, Alex Dale Oen, the world champion in this event who died suddenly in April from cardiac arrest.

"I just have to pay tribute to Alex Oen," van der Burgh said. "I know that he's been with me this year and helped me to finish the race in such a strong manner. If there is such a thing as a perfect race for me, I definitely think that I submitted it tonight. I don't even care about the world record. Once you become an Olympic champion, you join the club."

Lu Ying gave China another medal, taking silver behind Vollmer in 56.87. Australia's Alicia Coutts grabbed the bronze in 56.94. It was a tough night for Sjostrom, who not only lost her world record but didn't even get a medal, touching fourth in 57.17.

Muffat and Schmitt raced side by side the whole way in the 400 free, with Muffat clinging tenaciously to the lead while the American tried desperately to reel her in. She couldn't pull it off, as Muffat touched in 4 minutes, 1.45 seconds to win by a scant 0.32. Adlington was looking to defend her Olympic title in the event, but the big crowd seemed pleased that she rallied from a sluggish start to at least make the podium.

"I saw them guys. They were off. I just couldn't keep with them," Adlington said. "To be honest, I am so happy I managed to sneak that medal. ... Another Olympic medal is just unbelievable, and there is not an ounce of disappointment in me."

The same couldn't be said for the American men's relay team.

Dodgers sweep rival Giants

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:34 p.m. ET July 29, 2012

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw put together another dominant performance at AT&T Park.

His teammates are also getting comfortable at the Giants' waterfront ballpark - and now they are right back in the thick of the NL West race.

Kershaw pitched a five-hitter for his second shutout of the season, and Los Angeles beat San Francisco 4-0 on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep of the division-leading Giants.

"We understand this is our year. There's no excuses," Kershaw said after his second shutout of the season. "Everybody's doing everything they can to put us in the right place to win. We just have to go out there and play now."

That is a far cry from the feeling in the Dodgers clubhouse a month ago when they were shut out in three consecutive games and let a three-game lead in the division slip away.

San Francisco (55-46) still leads Los Angeles (56-47) by one percentage point with nine games remaining between the teams this season.

"This is going to be a battle through the next couple of months," Dodgers slugger Matt Kemp said. "The last time we came here we were banged up. Now there's the healthy Dodgers out there and we're playing good."

Kershaw (8-6) struck out seven and walked one in his fifth career shutout, beating the Giants for the first time in three starts this season. He lost both previous outings despite allowing only four earned runs in 14 innings.

Kershaw, 5-2 with a 0.66 ERA in eight career starts at AT&T Park, also survived a scare in the eighth when Marco Scutaro hit a line drive that ricocheted off the pitcher's glove hand. Second baseman Mark Ellis retrieved the ball to make the out as Kershaw tossed his glove to the ground. He met briefly with a team trainer and manager Don Mattingly on the mound, then struck out Brandon Belt to end the inning.

"It puts us right back in the middle of things," Kershaw said. "My fastball wasn't great. I just didn't have that little extra on it. But (my) offspeed was good and I mixed it up. It was just kind of a combination of everything, really."

Ellis, Kemp, Andre Ethier and James Loney had two hits apiece, and Luis Cruz added two hits and drove in two runs for the Dodgers.

Blanked in a three-game series at San Francisco from June 25-27, Los Angeles outscored the Giants 19-3 in this series and didn't give up a run during the final 20 innings.

San Francisco, which has lost four straight, didn't get a runner past second and managed only three hits in the final seven innings. The Giants were swept at home by the Dodgers for the first time since June 28-30, 2010.

"That's what happens when you face one of the best pitchers in the game right now," San Francisco starter Ryan Vogelsong said. "If anything, this will make us a little mad and we can take it out on the Mets the next time in."

The slumping New York Mets will visit the Giants for a four-game series that begins on Monday.

Vogelsong (8-5), who had won both of his prior matchups against Kershaw this year, allowed two runs - one earned - and six hits in six innings with five strikeouts and three walks. He lowered his ERA to a major league-leading 2.22.

Los Angeles went ahead with two runs in the fourth, following singles by Juan Rivera and Kemp. With runners at the corners and one out, newly acquired Hanley Ramirez grounded to third and beat second baseman Ryan Theriot's relay throw to avoid a double play as Rivera scored. After Scutaro dropped Loney's popup to third for an error, Cruz hit an RBI double.

Vogelsong struck out Kershaw with the bases loaded to end the sixth. The Dodgers added a pair of runs in the eighth against Jeremy Affeldt following a one-out double by Loney. Cruz and Mark Ellis hit RBI singles.

NOTES: Kershaw pitched a six-hit shutout against St. Louis on May 19. ... Loney is hitting .328 in July (21-for-64). ... The first seven hitters in the Dodgers' order all had at least one hit. No. 8 batter A.J. Ellis walked four times. ... Cruz has a career-best, 12-game hitting streak that is also the longest by a Dodgers player this season. ... LHP Madison Bumgarner goes for his team-leading 12th win for San Francisco against the Mets on Monday. ... Aaron Harang (7-5), knocked out in the fifth inning by Arizona on May 22, starts for the Dodgers in the opener of a three-game home set against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

EU regulators seek global concessions from Google

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - EU regulators are seeking concessions from Google which could be applied worldwide to resolve concerns about its business practices, the EU's antitrust chief said on Wednesday, raising the stakes in forthcoming settlement talks.

Google, whose search engine is used for around four-fifths of Internet searches in Europe, has been accused by rivals of abusing its dominant market position, and the European Commission said in May it was concerned about its alleged anti-competitive behavior.

The Commission typically looks for concessions that would benefit European consumers, but has on occasions asked for remedies with a broader scope.

"We will look for worldwide solutions, it will not be very useful to get European-wide solutions," EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia told a news conference.

The Google case is a critical one for Almunia, and his demand for globally applicable solutions -- which might see an EU decision serving as a template for worldwide regulators -- shows another way in which he is trying to stamp his mark on EU competition policy.

He is also keen for more speed, especially for an industry that is constantly innovating. In May he said he wanted the Commission to get a faster resolution over Google than it has in past cases. One involving Microsoft was brought in 1998 and only received a final court judgment this year.

The EU watchdog has said the Google's search results may unfairly favor its services over its rivals' and may have copied material from other websites, such as travel and restaurant reviews, without permission.

NO LENGTHY BATTLE, NO FINES?

Google too is anxious to avoid a lengthy battle such as Microsoft's, as well as a penalty: Microsoft was fined more than a billion euros by the Commission.

The company has carefully avoided public confrontation with the Commission, and has tried to build an image in Europe as a sponsor of techy cultural projects.

Asked on Wednesday to comment on Almunia's remarks, Google spokesman Al Verney said: "We are continuing to work cooperatively with the European Commission."

The Commission said it had reached "a level of good understanding" with Google that would form the basis for technical discussions towards a resolution of its concerns.

Google -- to comply with EU demands -- revised initial proposals to resolve the dispute to cover all platforms, including computers, tablets and mobile devices, someone familiar with the case told Reuters.

Regulators will discuss the technical details of Google's proposals in the coming weeks, though there is no deadline for a decision, Almunia said.

However, analysts cautioned that a statement of objections -- a formal charge sheet -- remained a possibility despite the apparent progress towards a settlement.

Almunia's demand for a global solution underscores the global nature of the technology industry, an issue which regulators in different jurisdictions will have to deal with. Google is also currently under investigation in the United States.

"With tech markets, we can expect to see more and more remedies for a global market," said Mark Tricker, a partner at law firm Norton Rose.

"It is in Google's interest to agree to that. If it is being investigated in other countries, it can then say these concerns have been dealt with in the EU."

The European Commission can fine companies up to 10 percent of their annual revenues, which in Google's case amounts to some $4 billion.

Almunia said other parts of Google's business could still come under scrutiny.

"We have not opened any other investigations, but I don't exclude that in the future other aspects of Google activity can also follow the path of the investigation we launched in 2010," he said.

He had previously said other complaints related to Google's top-selling smartphone operating system Android, which competes with systems by Apple, Microsoft, Research in Motion and others.

How to Measure Your Home's Square Footage | Zillow Blog

One of the most confusing and misleading metrics in the home building and home selling business is area?? the ?size? of a house.

The problem is that there?s no adopted standard; everyone measures it differently. There has been a move in the past few years to create a universal standard like the one architects use (specified in AIA contracts), but it isn?t mandatory and isn?t yet widely used.

Many state boards of real estate specify a process to measure house area, but it?s a recommendation, not a requirement. So ?house area? means different things to different people.

The one thing that is always true is that area is never measured from the inside of the walls; the area of a house always includes all wall thicknesses interior and exterior.

Gross area

Not surprisingly, builders and real estate agents often want to show the largest number they can, so they sometimes measure the entire perimeter of the house on both floors. They may or may not include porches, stairs and two-story spaces. Because you don?t know their basis, it can be very hard to compare one house to another.

A relatively impartial source is your county auditor or assessor. They calculate the size of the house for tax purposes and therefore measure all houses the same way. And although their measurements aren?t always a true reflection of the size of the house, they use the same protocol, so it?s easier to compare one house to another.

But county records show only the gross areas contained within the perimeter of the foundation, which doesn?t accurately reflect the ?livable? space within.

Defining separate spaces

A better way is to list areas separately, rather than combining them into one number; that?s the way we calculate areas at our office:

We first measure the perimeter of the house at the exterior wall sheathing?? not the siding or brick, just the framing?? on both floors.

Next we subtract the upper part of any two-story spaces and deduct the area of stairs on the second floor (they?ve already been counted on the first floor).

Spaces that are less than 6 feet high aren?t counted in the ?main? number (areas with sloped ceilings). Instead, we list those areas separately.

In fact, we show a listing of square foot areas that lets you know where the areas are being counted from, something like this:

First floor: 1,500 square feet
Second floor: 1,000 square feet
Subtotal heated areas: 2,500 square feet
Finished basement: 800 square feet
Total heated areas: 3,300 square feet

Screened porch: 200 square feet
Open porches: 200 square feet
Garage: 600 square feet
Total unheated areas: 1,000 square feet

To simply say that this house is 3,300?square feet or 4,300 square feet, or 4,700 square feet (if you include upper volumes and stairs) would be misleading. It?s more informative to say it?s a 2,500-square-foot house with a screened porch, garage and finished basement.

The best you can do right now (other than measuring it yourself) is to ask the builder or selling agent their basis for measurement. You need to know exactly what?s included in that number if you?re comparing homes based on size.

Mayor Mark Stodola said, "We want to be very aggressive and make sure these things get nipped in the bud."

He said they had no choice but to file a lawsuit for Lessie Smith. He has been cited more than half a dozen times for selling alcohol without a license from his home, often on Sundays.

It's all a part the mayor says, of their aggressive campaign to get rid of nuisance properties and make safer neighborhoods.

Dewayne Turner said, "I have never known any one get shot over here, beat up over here or taken advantage of over here."

Lessie Smith says he plans to fight the lawsuit in court, so far no hearings on it have been scheduled.

We?re Not Even Close to a Robust Recovery

Even this year, the consensus got it wrong, expecting a recovery to annual GDP growth of better than than 3 percent. But the first-half growth rate looks set to come in closer to 1.5 percent at best, even below 2011?s dismal 1.7 percent. And now, after getting the first half of 2012 wrong, many are repeating the fairy tale that a combination of lower oil prices, rising auto sales, recovering house prices, and a resurgence of U.S. manufacturing will boost growth in the second half of the year and fuel above-potential growth by 2013.

Greene County Recreation offering swimming lessons this summer ...

GREENSBORO ? This summer marks the first season that Greene County Recreation Center has offered swimming lessons to the community. Fortunately for aspiring swimmers, Greene County Country Club has allowed the center to use the club pool for the lessons.

The students are learning the basics of swimming and water safety from Linda Parrish, an experienced swimmer and instructor.

Parrish, director of the recreation center, decided it was best to divide students into small groups based on age and ability so she could focus on each of her students specific needs.

Because we dont have a pool at the recreation center we havent been able to offer swimming lessons in the past, Parrish said. Using the Greene County Country Club pool has provided us with a great opportunity to teach students how to swim.

The groups are small so that Parrish can give each student the attention they need in order to develop themselves as swimmers. Linda Billingsley decided to enroll her 13-year -old son Sterling in the swimming class because of his persistent desire to learn how to swim.

Linda Parrish has done a great job teaching Sterling the basics of swimming and safety. Shes an excellent teacher, Billingsley said. Sterling has been doing different sports with the recreation center since he was 5 years old, but never had the chance to learn how to swim until now. He has always wanted to be a swimmer.

Volunteer Lucille Howard works alongside Parrish teaching the children. As a country club member for 15 years, Howard has frequented the pool for years and has become a skilled swimmer. When she heard lessons where going to be offered at the club pool she decided to offer her assistance.

I have always been a swimmer and I thoroughly enjoy it. I am a trained swimmer as well as a trained life guard, Howard said.

Johnny Satterfield, grandfather to two of Parrishs students, believes that learning how to swim is essential for a childs development.

Every child needs to know how to swim especially since we live around Lake Oconee, Satterfield said. I worry about the children being around the water and not knowing how to swim.

The recreation center will be offering another 4 day session of swim classes starting the week after July 4. The lessons are in the morning, Monday through Thursday, and cost $20 for Greene County Country Club members and $25 for non-members.

Do You Have The One Key Ingredient Necessary For Disaster ...

It is not rocket science, we all know that we should have a disaster recovery plan in place for our business regardless of its size. When disaster strikes, it seldom discriminates on the size of the company. Every business is vulnerable. Whether the disaster is a hurricane, tornado or the latest virus or worm unleashing fury on your computers and databases, every business faces risks.

A small business is seldom immune, and in many cases a small business is the most vulnerable of all businesses because they simply aren?t prepared for disasters. Large corporations allocate resources (staff and budgets) and are as a whole more prepared to face the unexpected. Most of the fortune 500 companies have disaster recovery plans in place to insure the continuity of their businesses.

So, what?s the key ingredient necessary to recovery from a disaster with the least amount of damage to the business? It?s really very simple. The key ingredient is a having a plan before the disaster strikes. It is virtually impossible, to be organized and strategically think through and implement a disaster recovery plan while in the throws of a disaster.

However, when all conceivable disasters have been imagined and contingency plans are calmly and methodically implemented in advance, a company has a tremendous advantage. Contingencies are now in place to fall back on when and if a disastrous event occurs. You are beginning to get the picture. Protecting the company assets and sustaining the least amount of damage, is simply a matter of planning and making that plan known to all corners of the corporation. It is importing to oversee properly implemented prior to any need. This is business continuity in a nutshell, and business continuity is becoming more and more important as we move into the new millennium.

Business continuity, for the small entrepreneur, doesn?t have to be as complicated as we try to make it.

A few simple questions can help you determine how extensive your disaster recovery system needs to be. One of the first questions to ask is what would happen to the business if all of the data processed in the last hour was lost? How hard would it be to recover if you lost all of the data over the last 24 hours? Or what about losing a week?s worth of data? If you are a banker, or a stock broker, losing even hour?s worth of data would be unacceptable. You can imagine the nightmares that would cause! However, if you are a shoe store, losing data for a day would be inconvenient, but not tragic. These types of questions will help you determine the level of risk your company can

live with, and how to move forward in your planning.

If data recovery is essential to your business, experts in this field are available to make sure you have done all that can be done to minimize any damage that could be caused from a disaster of any type. Expert disaster recovery planners and business continuity planners are trained to help find solutions that are not obvious. It is not necessary to re-invent the wheel!

If you are like most small entrepreneurs, you are probably able to put a perfectly good plan in place on your own. Take a few minutes and imagine the most disastrous event that could happen to your small business right now ? Do you have a plan as to how your small business would attempt to recover? A scary thought, but isn?t it something that you should take a minute to consider and plan for. This enables you to put into place NOW the very things that you would want and need to have at the time of the disaster.

Pre-disaster planning makes recovering from the unthinkable possible. If you fail to plan, you can plan to fail. It is simple. Don?t think planning for disasters are something to put off until you have nothing else to do. The success of your small business may depend on your taking the time now to review your situation carefully and consider all of the worst case possibilities for disasters that you hope never happen. Remember, disasters don?t make appointments to happen!

What can I do if I didn?t do my disaster recovery planning?

The most common disaster for a company is not the Tsunami or the hurricane, but the simple loss of data. Computer crashes, hard drive failures, and software malfunctions cost corporations millions of dollars every day. Disaster recoveries are completely dependent on the reliability of the backup systems in place at the time of disaster.

Server disaster recovery software is available for those caught without a plan or those who failed to properly implement a data backup plan. It is not always reliable, and often a very costly solution for a business. So, why take the risk. Consider your business continuity planning a top priority. If a disaster should strike, you will be very glad you did!

Am I Just Stoned Or... Are Religions Really Trippy? | Marijuana.com

Weed - Am I Just Stoned Or… Are Religions Really Trippy?

Religion? we?ve got some ugly news for the ?godless?. Religion is inescapable ? there?s never been a human society without some form of worship and don?t point out communist societies, like the Soviet Union; they worship toilet paper. Of course beatniks, peace-nix and no-good-nix question why we need religion? Religion, however twisted and perverse it is; Is the cornerstone of our civilization. Without it ? there would be no laws, no morality, no social structure and no guidelines for furnishing our tabernacles.

Do you want to live in a state of valueless depravity? Like those hippie pot smokers, over in Holland. Side note: if you?re reading this and are from Holland, I meant Belgium. Religion is here for the benefit of mankind. So he can profit from its numerous gifts. Among them, the law; The Ten Commandments are the basis of our entire system of justice, without them we wouldn?t have laws. Without laws there would be chaos. Those two tablets give you everything you need to run an orderly society. Lying, stealing, murdering, adultery, idol worship and covenanting? are out. Parent honoring and Sabbath observance are in.

Religion lays out clear definitions of good and evil. It distinguishes good deeds (or solids) in biblical Hebrew, from sins. Think about it, without this guidance of a reward / punishment system; how would we know that it is actually ?good? to give charity to beggars. Without the concept of right and wrong, we would have no cowboy movies, or cop shows. There?d be no good people, or bad people? just people.

I believe it was the English?philosopher ?Hobbs? who describes human life as solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short. Religion allows us to ignore all that by praying. When we appeal to our deities with a slaughter ewe or a prostration? or in the case of the Hare Krishna, an airport conga line. We exert some control over our existence and are filled with hope that god may improve it. Otherwise we?d just be chanting our deepest desires into a silent indifferent void. How depressing would that be? Folks, life is chaotic and unpredictable. If a butterfly flaps its wings in the amazon, it could cause people on the other end of the globe to watch a discovery channel special on them.

Buddhism? there?s another go figure religion? Hey! Why don?t we all sit around in our robes and stare at the rock garden and just ?like? be aware?? Exactly, that?s the easiest rhetorical question I?ve ever asked. Buddhism instructs its followers to forsake all attachments to material things. I say ? go for it guys. That just means more stuff for those of us with good enough sense, to ?glorify our lord? with speedboats. And frankly, I?m offended by this idea of the so-called ?middle way??? the Buddhist doctrine avoiding extremes. What?s the point of a religion without extremes?

You?re either a believer of God, who is guaranteed a seat at ?God?s right hand?, in the ?kingdom of heaven?. Or your an infidel, condemned to boil eternally in a lake of searing excrement . This is a holy war folks, pick aside.

Islam?what can I say (that won?t result in threats)? Islam is a great and true religion. Revealed in the Koran, which was dictated by the angel gabriel, to the final prophet Mohammed; blessings and peace be upon him? next

Scientology, this fast growing the science fiction of a religion is attracting some smart people. At least they seem smart. They certainly know a lot about scientology, and while a lot of folks are quick to criticize scientology, for secrecy and a willingness to sue dissenters. But if you had figured out the secret of expunging engrams for the reactive mind? you?d be a bit protective of it too.

Though I may disagree with scientology on a number of points, like the notion that a galactic lord Xenu, exiled Satans to earth in space ships, shaped exactly like late 60?s era, DC-Eight airplanes, and stacked them around volcanoes. Then blew them up with hydrogen bombs, seventy-five million years ago. And that the spirits of those Satans now inhabit our bodies and prevent us from reaching our full potential.I do agree with a well-publicized disdain for psychoanalysis. Are your kidding me? $300 an hour? and all that guy wants to chat about is my mother? Beam me up L-Ron.

Rastafarianism ? any religion in the 20 twentieth-century that see?s ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie as a member of the holy trinity is worth our suspicion. Then again any religion who?s name is recognized by Microsoft word? can?t be that much of a threat. My main beef with these folks is that they try to make smoking grass acceptable by labeling it a?? of the sacrament.? In my book, that gets you raptured right into a federal prison camp. Reggae and weed do make for a pretty great corporate barbecue though.

Just a quick word here about all the other crazy cults. My problem with cults is that they don?t have the balls to be honest from the get go. They hide behind phrases like? ?self-improvement workshop?, or ?human potential coach?, or ?improv class?. Then they slowly sneak in the crazy stuff so that you don?t notice. If they had any guts at the very first cult meeting they?d say ?you all need to wear yellow bedsheets and have sex with me twice with a day?. Then keep giving me all of your money until the next comet comes by in twelve years. Problem solved. The wacky people can still join and the people who are just ?suggestible?, can still get out of there.

Rogge again rules out minute silence for Israelis

(AP) ? IOC President Jacques Rogge won't budge: There will be no minute's silence for the Israeli victims of the 1972 Munich massacre at the opening ceremony of the London Olympics.

Rogge rejected the latest calls Saturday for a special observance to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the murder of 11 Israeli athletes and coaches by Palestinian gunmen at the Munich Games.

"We feel that the opening ceremony is an atmosphere that is not fit to remember such a tragic incident," Rogge said.

The International Olympic Committee has come under pressure from politicians in the United States, Israel and Germany to pay tribute to the slain Israelis during Friday's ceremony.

Rogge said the IOC will honor them at a reception in London during the games on Aug. 6. He said IOC officials will also attend a ceremony in Germany on the anniversary of the attack on Sept. 5 at the military airfield of Furstenfeldbruck where most of the Israelis died.

Rogge also noted that he has attended several ceremonies with the Israeli Olympic Committee and Israeli athletes during recent games.

"We feel that we are able to give a very strong homage and remembrance for the athletes within the sphere of the national Olympic committee," he said at a news conference. "We feel that we are going to do exactly the same at the exact place of the killings at the military airport near Munich on the 5th of September, the exact date."

During the second week of the Munich Games, eight members of the Black September militant group penetrated the laxly secured Olympic Village and took Israeli team members hostage. A day later, all 11 were dead. German police killed five of the eight assassins during a failed rescue attempt and Israeli agents tracked down and killed the others.

The Israeli and German foreign ministers and the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee have urged the IOC to observe a minute's silence.

President Barack Obama also supports the campaign for a minute's silence, White House National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor told Yahoo News in an email Friday.

Rogge was asked whether he was swayed by Obama's view.

"We also pay big attention to recommendations coming either from the political world, or cultural world, or world of enterprise," Rogge said. "And we take then a decision taking into consideration (those recommendations). I will not say that we are necessarily following the advice, but we take it into consideration, yes."

On Sunday morning, a memorial event will be held in east London attended by London Mayor Boris Johnson and Efraim Zinger, head of Israel's Olympic committee.

On another issue related to Israel, Rogge said the IOC would investigate any athletes who pull out of competing against Israelis in London claiming they were injured. In the past, athletes from Iran have withdrawn from Olympic events that included Israelis without facing sanctions.

"If an athlete is genuinely injured or ill, then of course it is understandable," Rogge said. "But we will examine every case very thoroughly and we will examine every case with an independent medical team. If the medical team does not ratify the decision of the first doctor, then the athlete will be punished."

Rogge said the IOC has reminded all national Olympic committees, not just Arab bodies, that refusing to compete against another competitor is "totally forbidden by the Olympic Charter."

Rogge spoke following a daylong IOC executive board meeting. The full IOC will hold a three-day general assembly starting Tuesday.

With six days to go until the opening of the London Games, Rogge expressed confidence in preparations after a week of headlines about concerns over security, transportation and other matters. The focus has been on the failure of private security firm G4S to recruit enough guards to protect the venues, a blunder which forced the British government to call up an extra 3,500 soldiers.

Rogge said the IOC has received full explanations from London organizers and the government."We are reassured that everything that is needed has been put in place," he said. "Yes it has been an issue. It has been identified. Corrective measures were taken. I humbly believe it is time to move on."

Rogge also said "common sense" would prevail in protecting sponsors from "ambush marketing" by brands not officially associated with the games. The issue gained prominence this week when London organizing head Sebastian Coe suggested in a radio interview that a spectator wearing a Pepsi T-shirt might not be allowed into an Olympic venue because Coca-Cola is a main sponsor.

"Individual cases will not be pursued by the police, that goes without saying," Rogge said. "But if there is a blatant attempt at ambush marketing by another company or by a group of people with commercial views, then of course we will intervene.

"If you have a T-shirt with the logo of a competitor of one of our sponsors, then we will not intervene, of course."

(AP) ? Two endangered Cuban crocodiles have hatched at the National Zoo in Washington.

The hatchings are considered genetically valuable because their mother, Dorothy, was caught in the wild. Dorothy is thought to be 55 years old and zookeepers figured she had stopped laying eggs years ago.

But when they discovered she had laid eggs, they took great care to incubate them for months. Only two of the eggs hatched successfully, the first Cuban crocs to do so at the zoo in nearly 25 years.

Scientists believe there are fewer than 6,000 Cuban crocs remaining in the wild in two small areas of Cuba.

U.S. zoos are trying to expand the population, though births are rare. There have been a handful of hatchings in Florida and Kentucky zoos.

State insurance officials to get health care update | StAugustine.com

TALLAHASSEE (AP)?? Florida insurance officials are getting an update on health care coverage following the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark ruling that upheld the federal Affordable Care Act.

The Florida Health Insurance Industry Advisory Board and the state Office of Insurance Regulation are holding a joint meeting Thursday.

Their agenda includes presentations from a statewide association representing private health insurance companies, the state agency that oversees Florida's Medicaid program and the conservative Heritage Foundation.

Gov. Rick Scott, a staunch opponent of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, has declared Florida will refuse to carry out parts of the new federal law.

While the Supreme Court ruled it is constitutional, the justices said the federal government cannot require states to expand the joint Medicaid program, a key element of the overhaul.

The Obama campaign?s attack on Mitt Romney?s business record hasn?t changed the belief that venture capital firms like the one Romney worked for are better job creators than government programs like the ones championed by the president.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 57% of Likely U.S. Voters believe venture capital companies are better at creating jobs than government programs are. Just 27% think government programs are a better way to create jobs. Seventeen percent (17%) aren?t sure.

Whatever your motivation for taking matters into your own hands, here are some home improvement tips that will make your home improvements easier.

Do not wait until December to start winterizing your home, and start in autumn, instead. Weatherstripping and other products that depend on adhesives will stick better while the air and surface temperatures are still warmer, and you need not wait until it?s frigid outside to perform tasks like insulating pipes in the crawlspace.

Repairing leaky faucets is an excellent home improvement project for even a novice handyman. If you are able to find and repair these items quickly, it will minimize the amount of water that is wasted in your home each day. The savings from this project will quickly add up on your monthly water bill.

An easy home improvement that can be done in just under an hour is to install a programmable thermostat. Disconnect the power for the thermostat and then it should be as simple as disconnecting three wires and reattaching three wires. Programmable thermostats are great money savers because they can be timed to turn off the heat and air when no on is at home.

If the caulking surrounding your tub is stained or mildewed, consider replacing it. With less than an hour of work, your bathroom will look much nicer. Use a screwdriver or other tool to remove the old caulking, and ensure that the surface is dry before applying the new caulking. Look for a variety specifically meant for bathrooms; many of these also resist mildew growth.

When you are remodeling your bathroom, make sure not to add carpeting to the floor. Not only does carpeting stain easily, but the water from the shower will give the carpet, and subsequently your whole bathroom, a foul odor. Instead, go with a tile that can withstand any water that may get on the floor.

If you live in a rural area, consider purchasing a power back up generator. When the lights go out and sometimes your heating even depends on it, you can be without power for hours or even days in seriously harsh weather. A power generator can help you take care of the necessities that you can?t do without when the electricity is out.

Check with your local electric and/or gas company to see if you might qualify for a grant to weatherize your home. In the interest of saving energy, your heating and cooling company may insulate your attic, weatherstrip your doors and windows and even replace your ancient heating and cooling system. Take a moment to ask!

If you have the space and it is allowed under city ordinances, consider adding an extension to your home. The extra space can be used as an office, den or family room. Consider putting a skylight in your addition. These add ons will increase the value of your home considerably.

If you live in a hot climate, replace your original glass windows with low-E glass, which can make it easier and more affordable to cool your house in the boiling summertime. Although the installation can be a bit pricey if you pay someone to do it, you will recoup your costs in energy savings by the end of the summer.

Home improvement is often a daunting task. This is because of the time and the amounts of money required. However, it doesn?t have to be so bad. If you have several projects in your house, divide them up into several smaller DIY projects. For example you may want to redo the entire living room. Start simple, by just replacing the carpet, and before you know it, your living room will be like new.

Put electrical wire connectors on your tubes of caulking! Those little plastic covers that come with the tubes always go missing! A readily had replacement that works as good or better than the original cap is an electrical wire connector. You can even use special colors for special types of tubes.

In home improvements the kitchen usually makes up the foundation of the home. Putting in new wooden cabinets along with shiny new faucets and a marble countertop, can immediately add brightness to a room and make it such a much more enjoyable space. This will also make the house more desirable to others if you decide to sell.

Recover your old couch! More than likely you are tired of it because the cover is no longer attractive. If you have even the most basic of sewing skills you can fix that all on your own. Carefully tear off the old cover piece by piece. Use the pieces as patterns to cut new pieces from newly purchased material. Sew it all together and you have a brand new look!

An easy change that you can make in your kitchen is to change the faucet on your sink. Home improvement stores now have a wide selection of faucets from which you can choose from. You can, typically, install the new faucet yourself within a few minutes.

Whether it is summer or winter you should always check for drafts. There is nothing more frustrating than heating or cooling the outside. Use a lighted candle near a window or door, and if the candle flickers, you know you probably have a crack to seal. Be sure to check all sides of all the windows and exterior doors.

When it comes to home improvement, it is important to realize that the more customized your have, the less likely it will be appreciated by your future buyers. If you are concerned about the resale value of your house, it is important to appeal to the general public as opposed to your own tastes.

If you are hiring someone to perform your home improvement work, make sure to get multiple bids for the project. Although it can be a little time consuming, this process ensures that you are getting the best deal on your project, and it helps you become more familiar with the industry and what to expect from your contractor.

As was previously stated, home improvement can be a great endeavor for nearly anyone to start. It takes a little knowledge to learn the basics so that you can start improving correctly, but you don?t have to become a pro if you don?t want to. Just keep those tips in mind and start improving your home!
