Argentine president wants to take on Hollywood
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) ? Argentina's leader unveiled an ambitious plan Wednesday to support the country's television and film creators with a new industrial park along the Buenos Aires waterfront that she hopes will be modeled on Hollywood's studios.
President Cristina Fernandez decreed the creation of a public-private company leveraging state pension funds to attract private developers and turn an abandoned industrial area near the city's glitzy Puerto Madero district into a business incubator known as the "Polo Audiovisual," or audiovisual center.
"Just like they do it in Hollywood, where support for the industry has made it possible for its content to become almost universal, we want our values and culture in Argentina to have this kind of development," she said.
Argentina's "El Secreto de Sus Ojos" won the best foreign film Oscar in 2010, but the vast majority of movies Argentines see are still made in America.
Fernandez has sought to change that by requiring at least a minimum amount of televised content to be homegrown, and by subsidizing a content boom on state-run television that has fostered thousands of jobs.
A new media law requires cable companies to include a movie channel run by the National Institute of Cinematic and Audiovisual Art, as well as Paka Paka, an advertising-free channel similar to the Children's Television Workshop, which brought Sesame Street to U.S. viewers.

In between the two planned developments, thousands of people live in grim poverty on the riverbanks, in shacks that get swamped whenever the river water kicks up.

Health Study Finds Many Back-To-School Vinyl - Yeshiva World News
Senator Charles Schumer had a Sunday warning for parents who are making back-to-school purchases for their children. Speaking to reporters in Midtown Manhattan, Schumer said a new report finds many children?s vinyl products, such as three-ring binders, lunch boxes and bookbags, contain a harmful chemical that could cause adverse health effects.
?Today we?re releasing a report that shows many of the popular back-to-school products are laden with toxic chemicals called phthalates, and they?re already banned in children?s toys,? said Schumer.
The Center for Health, Environment and Justice and the Empire State Consumer Project commissioned the report, which tested products in the city and found about 75 percent of them have the toxic chemical.
Schumer has urged the Senate to pass the Safe Chemicals Act, which would require all chemicals to be evaluated for safety.

COQUITLAM, British Columbia (AP) ? Lydia Ko won the Canadian Women's Open on Sunday to become the youngest winner in LPGA Tour history and only the fifth amateur champion.
The 15-year-old South Korean-born New Zealander closed with a 5-under 67 for a three-stroke victory. She broke the age record of 16 set by Lexi Thompson last September in the Navistar LPGA Classic in Alabama, and is the first amateur winner since JoAnne Carner in the 1969 Burdine's Invitational.
In January, Ko won the New South Wales Open in Australia at 14 to become the youngest player to win a professional tour event, a mark broken by 14-year-old Brooke Henderson in June in a Canadian Women's Tour event in Quebec. Ko also won the U.S. Women's Amateur two weeks ago in Cleveland.
Ko finished at 13-under 275 at The Vancouver Golf Club, pulling away with birdies on five of the first six holes on the back nine. She opened with consecutive 68s and shot a 72 on Saturday to take a one-stroke lead into the final round.
Inbee Park shot a 69 to finish second.

Top ally of former Ivorian president arrested in Ghana
ABIDJAN (Reuters) - Ghana has arrested a top ally of Ivory Coast's former President Laurent Gbagbo after weeks of deadly attacks on Ivorian police and military installations, officials from the two neighboring West African countries said on Saturday.
Gbagbo is awaiting trial at the International Criminal Court in The Hague on charges of crimes against humanity committed during a brief 2011 civil war.
Justin Kone Katinan served as Gbagbo's budget minister during the conflict, which erupted in the world's top cocoa grower after Gbagbo rejected the election victory in late 2010 of his rival, current President Alassane Ouattara. More than 3,000 people were killed.
Katinan had been living as a political refugee in Ghana but remained a vocal supporter of Gbagbo and a critic of Ouattara's government. Ivory Coast issued an international warrant for his arrest last year, accusing him of economic crimes.
"He has indeed been arrested in Ghana. Discussions are under way with the Ghanaian authorities over the principle and terms of his extradition," Ivorian government spokesman Bruno Kone told Reuters.
Ghana's Deputy Information Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed Katinan's arrest.
Ivory Coast has been struggling to cope with a series of armed raids targeted against the country's security services that began earlier this month. At least 15 people have been killed, stoking fears of renewed instability.
The government has accused a network of Gbagbo's supporters both within Ivory Coast and abroad of organizing the attacks, which it says are designed to unsettle the population and foreign investors.
Gbagbo's political allies deny being behind the raids and accuse the authorities of using the attacks as a pretext for a crackdown on the opposition.
Last year, Ouattara's government issued around two dozen international warrants against former high-ranking military and political officials close to Gbagbo, most of whom were believed to be living in exile in Ghana, Benin and Togo.
Katinan is the second top official in Gbagbo's government to be arrested while living in exile following the extradition of Moise Lida Kouassi, a former defense minister, from Togo in June.
Ivory Coast has criticized its neighbors, particularly Ghana, for failing to honor the warrants. Katinan's arrest occurred just weeks after the death of Ghanaian President John Atta-Mills, generally seen as friendly towards Gbagbo's administration.

It just might be that Nokia?s decision to go with a completely new UI look and feel for its Lumia range saved it from a lot of grief. Nokia cut a deal with Apple long ahead of the Samsung trial ? and it now seems that the result of this trial could have put Nokia into a serious disadvantage had the company chosen to drag the process on. It just might be that the jury may have handed Nokia a substantial strategic smartphone advantage. We?ll see how the Android camp regroups after today?s setback. It is safe to say that the trial result was far harsher on Samsung than almost anyone anticipated.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? South Korea's Samsung won a home court ruling in its global smartphone battle against Apple on Friday when Seoul judges said the company didn't copy the look and feel of the U.S. company's iPhone, and that Apple infringed on Samsung's wireless technology.
However, in a split decision on patents, the panel also said Samsung violated Apple technology behind the bounce-back feature when scrolling on touch screens, and ordered both sides to pay limited damages.
The Seoul Central District Court ruling called for a partial ban on sales of products including iPads and smartphones from both companies, though the verdict did not affect the latest-generation phones ? Apple's iPhone 4S or Samsung's Galaxy S3.
The ruling affects only the South Korean market, and is part of a larger, epic struggle over patents and innovation unfolding in nine countries. The biggest stakes are in the U.S., where Apple is suing Samsung for $2.5 billion over allegations it has created illegal knockoffs of iPhones and iPads.
The Seoul ruling was a rare victory for Samsung in its arguments that Apple has infringed on its wireless technology patents, which previously have been shot down by courts in Europe where judges have ruled that they are part of industry standards that must be licensed under fair terms to competitors.
"This is basically Samsung's victory on its home territory," said patent attorney Jeong Woo-sung. "Out of nine countries, Samsung got the ruling that it wanted for the first time in South Korea."
The ruling ordered Apple to remove the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad 1 and iPad 2 from store shelves in South Korea, ruling that the products infringed on two of Samsung's five disputed patents, including those for telecommunications technology.
The court also denied Apple's claim that Samsung had illegally copied its design, ruling that similar rectangular screens with rounded corners had existed in products before the iPhone and iPad.
"Based on the similarity in these features, it is not possible to assert that the two designs are similar," the court said in a ruling issued in Korean that was translated into English by The Associated Press. It also said individual icons do not appear similar to the icons Apple used in the iPhone.
But the court ruled that Suwon, South Korea-based Samsung had infringed on one of Apple's patents on the feature that causes a screen to bounce back when a user scrolls to an end image. The court banned sales of Samsung products using the technology, including the Galaxy S2, in South Korea.
Court spokesman Kim Mun-sung said the court's ruling was to take effect immediately, although companies often request that sanctions be suspended while they evaluate their legal options.
Nam Ki-yung, a spokesman for Samsung, said the company welcomed the ruling. "Today's ruling also affirmed our position that one single company cannot monopolize generic design features," he said.
Apple did not respond to multiple calls seeking comment.
The court also ordered each company to pay monetary compensation to its competitor. Samsung must pay Apple 25 million won ($22,000) while Apple must pay its rival 40 million won.
South Korea is not a big market for Apple, and the ruling is not likely to have a big impact on jury deliberations in the U.S.
However, some industry watchers expressed concern over the South Korean ruling to protect industry standard patents. They say the decision could invite a trade war by giving Samsung and fellow South Korean company LG ? both industry standard patent holders ? more room to block rivals' entrance into South Korea if they don't agree to licensing terms.
"It would mean that foreign companies would either have to bow to Samsung's and LG's demands ... or stop selling in Korea," said Florian Mueller, a patent expert in Munich, Germany who has been closely following the case.
Courts in Europe, including Netherlands, France, Italy and Germany have rejected similar claims by Samsung that Apple violated its wireless patents, with judges arguing that the patents have become part of industry standards. Standard-essential patents are a crucial technology for new players to make products compatible with the rest of the market and must be licensed under fair and reasonable terms.
Europe's anti-trust regulator launched an investigation earlier this year into whether Samsung was failing to license those patents under fair and reasonable terms.
In Friday's ruling, the South Korean court said Samsung did not abuse its market power as an industry standard patent holder.
Apple filed suit against Samsung in San Diego, California, in April 2011, alleging that some of the South Korean company's smartphones and computer tablets are illegal knockoffs of Apple's iPhone and iPad. Samsung denies the allegations and argues that all companies in the cutthroat phone industry mimic each other's successes without crossing the legal line.
Cupertino, California-based Apple is suing Samsung for $2.5 billion and demanding that the court pull its most popular smartphones and computer tablets from the U.S. market, making the case one of the biggest technology disputes in history.
Jury deliberations in San Diego began Wednesday after three weeks of testimony. The case went to the jury after last-minute talks between the companies' chief executives failed to resolve the dispute.
Shortly after Apple filed its suit in the U.S., Samsung filed a complaint in South Korea against Apple for allegedly breaching its telecommunications patents.
The battle is all the more complex as Apple and Samsung are not only competitors in the fast-growing global market for smartphones and tablet computers, but also have a close business relationship.
Samsung, the world's biggest manufacturer of memory chips and liquid crystal displays, supplies some of the key components that go into Apple products, including mobile chips that work as a brain of the iPhone and the iPad.
The South Korean firm overtook Apple in less than three years in smartphone markets. In the second quarter of this year, Samsung sold 50.2 million units of smartphones, nearly twice as much as Apple's 26 million units, according to IDC.

Camouflage face paint can make a soldier invisible to enemy eyes. But it won't shield him from the searing heat of a roadside bomb, a lethal 1100 degrees Fahrenheit. And the greases and oils in the makeup just add fuel to the fire, essentially cooking the soldier's face. But now researchers have come up with a safer, heat-blocking alternative presented this week at a meeting of the American Chemical Society.
Conventional camo paint has tiny nanoparticles of pigment. They're great at reflecting visible light?which is why the paint looks green or black or tan. But the particles don't reflect longer wavelengths, like heat. To do that, you need larger globs of pigment.
So researchers bundled together a bunch of those smaller particles into chunks the size of grains of sand?large enough for heat rays to bounce right off. And they swapped out the grease for silicone which adds smoothness and spreadability to cosmetics, but won't catch fire.
Under a blowtorch, the new camo paint can block out heat for 15 seconds?long enough to weather a bomb blast, and keep soldiers cool in the heat of battle.

Lennon's killer denied parole for 7th time in NY
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? John Lennon's killer was denied release from prison in his seventh appearance before a parole board, New York corrections officials said Thursday.
Mark David Chapman, 57, was denied parole by a three-member board after a hearing Wednesday, the state Department of Corrections said. The transcript of his latest hearing wasn't immediately released.
Chapman can try again for parole in two years.
Chapman shot Lennon in December 1980 outside the Manhattan apartment building where the former Beatle lived. He was sentenced in 1981 to 20 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder. The musician, singer and songwriter was 40.
"Despite your positive efforts while incarcerated, your release at this time would greatly undermine respect for the law and tend to trivialize the tragic loss of life which you caused as a result of this heinous, unprovoked, violent, cold and calculated crime," board member Sally Thompson wrote. Board members Joseph Crangle and Marc Coppola agreed.
The panel praised Chapman's conduct and accomplishments but said "parole shall not be granted for good conduct and program completions alone." The board noted there was significant opposition to his release.
Chapman was transferred in May from the Attica Correctional Facility in western New York to the nearby Wende Correctional Facility. Both are maximum security. The prison system doesn't disclose why inmates are transferred.
At his previous hearing in 2010, Chapman recalled that he had considered shooting Johnny Carson or Elizabeth Taylor instead, and said again that he chose Lennon because the ex-Beatle was more accessible, that his century-old Upper West Side apartment building by Central Park "wasn't quite as cloistered." Chapman fired five shots outside the Dakota apartment house on Dec. 8, 1980, hitting Lennon four times in front of his wife, Yoko Ono, and others.
The former security guard from Hawaii said that his motivation was instant notoriety but that he later realized he made a horrible decision for selfish reasons.
"I felt that by killing John Lennon I would become somebody and instead of that I became a murderer and murderers are not somebodies," Chapman told the board two years ago.
Ono, 79, had said two years ago that she was trying to be "practical" in asking that her husband's killer remain behind bars. She said Chapman might be a danger to her, other family members and perhaps even himself.
In a 1992 interview at Attica, Chapman told Barbara Walters that it was dark when he shot Lennon in the back with a .38-caliber revolver after he exited a limousine, headed up the walkway to his apartment building and looked at Chapman. "I heard this voice ? not an audible voice, an inaudible voice ? saying over and over, 'Do it, do it, do it,'" Chapman said. He explained, "I thought that by killing him I would acquire his fame."
He has been in protective custody with a good disciplinary record, according to corrections officials.

The moment you see that two red lines, different emotions arise. It's a mixture of happiness, excitement and of course, worries. You begin to become anxious about the last cups of sodas, wines and coffees you have recently taken in.
Pregnancy can be an overwhelming, thrilling and worrisome experience. The moment you have learned about your pregnancy, you become extra mindful about everything you do and what you take into your mouth. But can mindfulness affect the health of your unborn baby? CERTAINLY!
According to research, pregnant women who are mindful about their health as well as their baby's health during pregnancy tend to produce healthier and fitter babies. Women who are less mindful about what they eat and what they do, tend to expose their babies to higher risk of suffering from birth defects and other undesirable consequences. So what are the things that you should be mindful about during pregnancy?
Alcohol Consumption
Consumption of large amount of alcohol imposes harm to you and your baby. Though the "safe amount" of alcohol consumption is still unknown, studies show that alcohol can cause physical and mental birth defects. Binge drinking can also cause damage to the baby's nervous system and it can trigger the development of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS).
Caffeine
Over consumption of caffeine is not good for the body. Intake of over 150 milligrams of caffeine increases a pregnant woman's risk for miscarriage. Make sure to cut down your consumption of alcohol to give your baby the best possible health. Take note that caffeine does not just refer to coffee. Caffeine also includes green tea, cola, softdrinks and black tea. You can have chocolates but only in moderate amount.
Medications
There are certain medications which you should avoid. Make sure to ask your doctor about the OTC and prescription drugs which are safe and unsafe to use. Some medications impose negative impacts to the health of babies. The use of recreational drugs can actually trigger premature birth, learning and behavioural problems, poor growth and birth defects. If you have used any of drugs during your pregnancy, make sure to consult your doctor about it.
Cigarette Smoking
In whatever circumstances, cigarette smoking is never beneficial to the body. By smoking, you also allow your unborn baby to smoke. You in fact encourage him or her to obtain carbon monoxide and nicotine which are very harmful to the body. In effect, your baby is at a greater risk for low birth weight, premature birth, stillbirth, asthma and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
Sugar and Artificial Sweeteners
Make sure to avoid artificial sweeteners. According to research, excessive consumption of artificial sweeteners can trigger the development of serious health conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, bladder cancer and birth defects.
Exercise
Some low-impact exercises are beneficial for a pregnant woman's body. However, high impact exercises such as bouncing, scuba diving, leaping, jarring, sit-ups, heavy lifting and weight training should be avoided. These exercises can exert too much pressure on the structures found within the uterus which can cause bleeding or premature labour. Instead of engaging in these exercises, perhaps you can do some yoga, swimming, walking and water aerobics.
Bug Spray and Household Chemicals
Avoidance from these chemicals is strongly recommended as they impose drastic impacts to the health of the babies. Frequent exposure to these chemicals can cause birth defects, premature delivery and miscarriage.
Lead
Make sure to avoid materials which contain lead. According to research, exposure to lead can cause premature delivery, developmental and learning delays, low birth weight and miscarriage.

Also, it is proven to be effective in improving the overall health being of the baby as well as the mother.
