Update:Leafs Coach Ron Wilson Gets Contract Extension

Ron Wilson must have been good this year.

The Toronto Maple Leafs coach playfully tweeted two days ago that he wanted a new contract and it seems the team has obliged.

Wilson posted on his official Twitter feed today that the Leafs have given him an extension saying

' "He came! He came!" Remember saying that as a little kid? Well he did: I got a new Red Ryder BB gun and a contract extension!'

The 56-year-old tweeted Friday that his Christmas wish was for a new contract from Leafs general manager Brian Burke.

Wilson is in the final season of a four-year contract and currently has the Leafs sixth in the Eastern Conference with 40
points.

Toronto has not made the playoffs in three prior seasons under Wilson.

Leafs GM Brian Burke responded later in the day "Congratulations to Ron Wilson on his contract extension! Merry Christmas Ron!"

COUNCIL BLUFFS ? Ahhhh, Christmas in Iowa.

Church tonight. Presents tomorrow. Exchanges on Monday. Politicians on Tuesday.

During this caucus season of giving, Iowans will see the race for the Republican presidential nomination at full force, as hopefuls jockey over the few days left until Jan. 3.

That's when voters will decide who walks away with a caucus win or at least a ticket out of Iowa in the first showdown of the effort to pick which GOP candidate goes up against President Barack Obama next year.

With the caucuses just two days after New Year's, the candidate visits, town hall meetings, television advertisements and calls are now as much a part of Iowa holiday traditions as presents and green bean casserole.

"To me, it's an interruption," said Ray Thompson of Council Bluffs, a registered Republican doing his Christmas shopping at the Mall of the Bluffs this week.

Added his wife, Deb: "This is supposed to be family time."

Among those courting Iowa Republicans are former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas and former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania.

Their efforts will get more intense after a day or two off for Christmas.

"They take time off even if they don't want to," said Dennis Goldford, a political scientist at Drake University in Des Moines. "They don't want to irritate the religious conservatives who are a big part of their party."

But the absence of the candidates this weekend might not be enough to make Iowans' hearts grow fonder.

"We're going to get bombarded with TV ads during the holidays," Goldford said.

But what really frustrates Lila Hoogeveen and Myra Hansen, both registered Republicans from Griswold, are the robocalls.

"I get at least four or five a day," Hoogeveen said. This time of year, when friends and family members ring up to catch up, she's left screening calls.

Both women plan to caucus but said they are undecided whom to support.

The majority of Iowans don't participate in the caucuses, Goldford said. They feel the intrusions even more.

"For the average person, if you don't participate in the caucuses, it's just relentless," he said. "This time of year is when the average person will . see it most often."

Even so, it's a big week for candidates. Goldford said they'll likely focus on rounding up current supporters to get out on Jan. 3 instead of trying to persuade undecided voters to pick them.

"After a certain point . you have to work on mobilization," he said. "You have to get the people out who support you."

It's possible that Iowans, after years of being first in the nation, are used to it all.

Democrats Diane and Scott Rathman of Council Bluffs said the ads, calls and appearances will continue, because Iowa is a general election swing state.

As Diane Rathman said: "When Christmas is over, we know it's going to get really bad. But we know it's going to get far worse by June or July."

The St. Cloud State University baseball team has received a number 11 ranking in the 2012 College Baseball Lineup Division II preseason national poll, which was released by this website that covers college baseball across the United States.

The Huskies were recognized by the pollsters for their 43-11 record from 2011, which included a first place finish at the 2011 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament and a number seed for the 2011 NCAA Division II Central Region tournament.

SCSU hosted NCAA regional play for the first time in 2011, and also set a team record for most victories in a season at 43.? The #11 ranking is one of SCSU's best-ever preseason rankings in a national poll for baseball.

Last year, the Huskies finished the year ranked #17 in the final College Baseball Lineup Division II poll and were ranked as high as #7 in the nation during the course of the season by the DII college baseball polls.

Alan Gross not part of Cuban prisoner amnesty (AP)

HAVANA ? An American government subcontractor jailed in Cuba for crimes against the state is not among nearly 3,000 prisoners granted amnesty by President Raul Castro on Friday, said a senior Foreign Ministry official.

"Alan Gross is not on the list," Josefina Vidal told The Associated Press, dashing the hopes of Gross' supporters in the United States, who have been pleading with Cuban authorities to release the 62-year-old Maryland native on humanitarian grounds. Vidal heads the Foreign Ministry's North American affairs division.

In a speech to lawmakers, Castro said his country would pardon 2,900 prisoners, including some convicted of political crimes. Castro cited an upcoming visit by Pope Benedict XVI among the reasons for the amnesty, saying the humanitarian act was "a demonstration of the generosity and strength of the revolution."

He said 86 foreign prisoners from 25 countries would be freed, and that diplomats would be notified shortly.

The Cuban leader said the list is filled with inmates who, like Gross, are more than 60 years old or are ailing. Others included in the amnesty are many female inmates and young people who don't have long criminal records.

Those convicted of serious crimes like murder, espionage or drug trafficking are not be part of the amnesty.

Gross was arrested in 2009 and sentenced to 15 years in jail for crimes against the state. The case has frozen already icy relations between Washington and Havana.

Gross's family concedes he was on a USAID-funded democracy building program, but insists his goal was simply to help the island's tiny Jewish community gain better access to the Internet. They say he spoke almost no Spanish and came to Havana repeatedly, hardly the stuff of a master spy.

Cuban officials say the USAID programs seek to overthrow the government.

Gross's supporters have appealed to Castro for a humanitarian release. They say Gross ? who was obese when he was arrested ? has lost more than 100 pounds in jail and is now gaunt and increasingly depressed. Meanwhile, his daughter and elderly mother have both been diagnosed with cancer.

American Jewish leaders have also appealed for Gross's release, saying Hanukkah festivities which began this week were a perfect opportunity.

Other high-profile inmates include two El Salvadoran men convicted of taking part in a bombing spree against Havana tourist hotels in the 1990s that killed an Italian tourist. The men were originally sentenced to death, but had their sentences reduced to life in prison earlier this year.

Cuba this year freed the last of some 75 political prisoners arrested in a notorious 2003 sweep. While others remain jailed for politically motivated crimes, most of those were involved in acts of violence like hijacking.

Rights group Amnesty International no longer includes any Cuban prisoners among its list of "prisoners of conscience" around the world.

Benedict is due to arrive in Cuba in March, though exact dates have not been announced. His visit will be the first by a pontiff since Pope John Paul II's historic tour in 1998.
