ARTICLES MANIAC ? Finding The Best Cheap Running Shoes

Buying some cheap running shoes saved my life. Seriously. I was 33 years old, working twelve hour days in an office, forty pounds overweight and highly inactive. My cholesterol was over three hundred, triglycerides through the roof and blood pressure starting to head toward the high end of the range. I was working too hard, drinking too much and sleeping too little.

Most of the fanfare in the running world today is due to the increased prominence of ?minimalist? running shoes, that forego massive amounts of cushioning in favor of lighter materials that favor a different gait, one in which the runner lands more on the front of his feet rather than the heel.

Shoe makers were generally hesitant to embrace the minimalist approach following decades of attempting to minimize the impact of a running stride with additional cushioning in the sole of the shoe. However, studies funded by Nike and others determined there might a scientific basis for improved performance and reduced injuries from minimalist shoes.

The downside to going to the niche running store, however, is that they tend to have a smaller selection of shoes and sizes, due to the smaller size of the stores and their associated stockrooms. Also, the proprietors of the stores (and the employees on the salesfloor) can be aggressively loyal to certain brands; this lack of objectivity can at times push the buyer towards a shoe that might not ultimately be as good fit or performer. Also, there are rarely discounts available at these niche retailers.

Eighteen months from starting running, I completed a 15k (about nine miles) run in an hour and twenty two minutes. It was exhilarating and a far cry from when I needed to catch my breath after tying my shoes. That was several years ago. Today, I try to run at least one organized half marathon and one 15k (for nostalgia?s sake) per year, and average 25-35 miles per week running. My health metrics are all much better than they were, within a healthy band, and my prospects for a long life are much better. I?m about thirty pounds lighter and drink far less alcohol so I have no dehydration issues on long runs.

About the only significant change I?ve made is that I now wear Reebok Realflex running shoes instead of the GEL-Kayanos; the Realflexes are light and comfortable and seem to have helped push me through a plateau level of improvement. So if you find yourself in a position like I was up there at the beginning of this, do yourself a favor: buy some shoes and get started.
