POLS ON THE STREET: Top Business Exec Seeks GOP Controller ...

TERRY TRACY ? a new face eyes Controller?s office in May primary.

What makes a business executive, with a top position in a national clothing chain, want to become the next City Controller ? and to do so as a Republican challenger in a city dominated by the Democratic Party?

He?s fully aware of the odds. He tackles them every day in his business world, often jetting to as many as four cities in a single day. If he can muster the financial support to sustain the energy he is investing in this campaign, then he could make a fight of it.

Here he explains why he wants to challenge a formidable incumbent:

?In my work, if I don?t create a superior customer experience, they will choose to buy elsewhere. If leaders in Philadelphia don?t create a superior living experience for its residents, they will choose to live elsewhere.

?I am running for Controller because it is the most-important, yet least-understood, of the offices in this city. Our governments? financial decisions have profound implications in the sense that how we spend our money, where we spend our money, even if we spend our money has a direct impact on the stability of our neighborhoods, the shop opening its doors for the first time, and the young lives in which we invest.

?In particular, Philadelphia?s young citizens need a voice in government who understands their generation and its unique challenges. We need energetic, fresh leadership committed to modernizing government, providing better services in a more efficient way, and creating an environment that empowers Philadelphians to thrive.

?I intend to use the Controller?s office as a bully pulpit to engage city agencies, state agencies, and the judiciary as part of a collective effort to require all schools that receive public funds to open their books, including both traditional public schools and public charter schools. The needs of our families must take precedence over the narrow partisan interests that too often dominate our political landscape.

?As a business leader who has run brick and mortar retail stores nationwide, I have been successful in a competitive industry where success is determined by the kind of creative management not customary, but certainly necessary in government today. Additionally, I have first-hand experience with the policies cities around the globe are pursuing to attract jobs, residents, and redevelop neighborhoods.?

Tracy has an academic background in public policy a BA in Political Science from Temple University and a Master?s in government administration from the Fels Institute of Government at the University of Pennsylvania.

BUTKOVITZ GETS HEAVY SUPPORT FROM LABOR, POLITICAL ACES

Aspiring challengers hoping to dislodge Controller Alan Butkovitz should be aware he?ll amass enough dollars to bury them in primary advertising if need be.

Backing him with a major fundraiser is IBEW Local 98 Business Mgr. John Dougherty who is hosting a fundraiser at his union HQ, 1719 Spring Garden Street, Feb. 11, 5:30-7:30 p.m. It?s an all-out push for dollars which could bring anywhere from $75,000 to $125,000, based on other such turnouts.

Welcoming committee will include Congressman Bob Brady, Council President Darrell Clarke, Councilman Curtis Jones and Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz. For info call Local 98 Political Dir. Marita Crawford at (215) 410-9200.

Another labor leader has already come out with a full-throated endorsement of Butkovitz?s reelection. That?s Henry Nicholas, veteran president of National Union of Hospital & Health care Employees Local 1199C which, with 18,000 members in the region, is no ally to take lightly.

HONKALA, RUNNING MATE ARE OFF THE HOOK

Green Party 2012 presidential candidate Jill Stein and vice presidential candidate Cheri Honkala were acquitted last Friday in Municipal Court on charges related to their civil-disobedience action at the Fannie Mae office.

They packed the courtroom with supporters. Stein and Honkala, along with 50 other protesters, staged a sit-in at Fannie Mae to demand policies that, according to Honkala, would ?keep families in their homes.? Fannie Mae is a federal government-sponsored enterprise, one of the largest holders of mortgages and mortgage-backed securities in the United States.

The protest was originally organized by the Poor People?s Economics Human Rights Campaign on behalf of two Philadelphia families whose homes were threatened by foreclosure.

HON. AMATO BERARDI ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL

Support continues to grow for the reelection of Hon. Deputy Amato Berardi to the ranks of the Italian center-right People for Freedom in Italy, according to sources from Rome.

Berardi, an Italian American political activist, campaigned five years and won a seat to the Italian parliament under a new law which permitted members of the Italian Diaspora in other countries to be represented in the parliament.

?I am honored to receive this additional endowment for the 17th Legislature, a sign of my greater contact with the Italian American community residing in North and Central America. Since 2008, my work has been to carry out the inquiries on behalf of the Italians living abroad and promise to continue to do so in the next legislature, strengthening further my commitment, if I could earn your trust again in winning my election. I thank all those who believed in me.?

REPUBLICAN PARTY SEEKS ELECTION BOARD CANDIDATES

Since Democratic ward leaders can easily come up with a judge and an inspector of election nominee this primary, the Republicans need to reach out for those interested in seeking the local neighborhood office if they wish to level the playing field.

GOP Ward Leader Matt Wolfe said, ?We really need Republicans to step up and run for these positions to have people in a position prevent voting fraud. The position requires two days a year and you get paid. It?s pretty simple to get on the ballot. You will have from Feb. 19 to Mar. 12 to get signatures of Republicans in your division to sign a petition to have your name on the ballot (10 signatures to run for Judge and five signatures to run for Inspector), have the petition notarized and file it at City Hall.?

SAWYER ANNOUNCES RUN FOR C.P. COURT

Stephanie Sawyer, a practicing attorney in Philadelphia since 1991, announced her intention to run for Judge of Common Pleas Court in the upcoming May 21 primary election. The campaign kick-off event was hosted by Michael Lambert, Esq.

Although Sawyer was originally born in Queens, N.Y., she was raised in Philadelphia. She attended Holy Cross ES, Masterman and then HS for Girls. She earned her undergraduate and law degrees from Temple University.

While earning her degrees, Sawyer held a wide variety of jobs, which ranged from being a private tutor, a 1st-grade teacher, and a waitress. Her non-legal work history, among other things, provided her a distinct understanding of the typical Philadelphian which stays with her to this very day.

Sawyer began her legal career while still in law school, interning briefly in the District Attorney?s office, the Public Defenders? office, with a sole practitioner, and finally in the Law Department for the City of Philadelphia. After graduation, Sawyer became an Assistant City Solicitor in Philadelphia?s Law Dept. for five years, until she opened her own private law firm.

IS VOTER PHOTO I.D. SLATED FOR BURIAL?

Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson has scheduled a July trial that could determine the fate of Pennsylvania?s controversial voter-ID law.

The Jul. 15 trial will center on whether the court should grant a permanent injunction blocking imposition of the law. A preliminary injunction temporarily halting the law from taking effect has been in force since October.

Opponents of the law, mainly Democrats, contend many Pennsylvanians will be disenfranchised under the measure, which would require voters to show valid identification in order to cast ballots.

Simpson?s scheduling order comes a week after fellow Commonwealth Court Judge Mary Hannah Leavitt barred a voter-ID law opponent from obtaining the driver?s-license information of Pennsylvanians.

The Washington, D.C.-based Advancement Project sought addresses, birth dates, as well as Social Security and driver?s-license numbers for all of the state?s drivers from the Pennsylvania Dept. of Transportation.

Leavitt ruled that the information, which the group claimed it needed for research, is not in the public record and cannot be disclosed.

NEW STATE REP. J.P. Miranda is ceremonially sworn in by Judge Carolyn Nicholss at Temple University, using family Bible provided by his grandmother Carmen Miranda who watches proudly.

YOUNGEST LEGISLATOR KEEPS ON SWEARING IN

J.P. Miranda, with the title of the youngest member in the General Assembly, as the representative from the 197th Dist., held a second swearing-in at Temple?s Ritter Hall.

Miranda has previously worked with Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, most recently directing the ?Philly Counts? program to ensure Philadelphia was fairly counted in the 2010 US Census. He has also served State Sen. Shirley Kitchen (D-N. Phila.) as a project manager.

He started out in government at the age of 19, working for Councilman Darrell Clarke, who spoke with enthusiasm at the ceremonial swearing-in. Councilman Bill Greenlee also paid tribute to Miranda as one of the city?s sharp young political operatives who cut their teeth in City Hall.

?To be entrusted with an office like this is gratifying,? said Miranda. ?I take these responsibilities given by the people very seriously. Immediately, I will work to improve lives of the residents of the 197th Dist., beginning with developing upon our public education structure for Philadelphians as well as all Pennsylvanians.?

Miranda campaigned on a platform of helping inner-city residents through tighter gun registration laws and increasing violence prevention programs for youth, as well as restoring human service and educational budget cuts.

The 197th Legislative Dist. is in North Central Philadelphia, west of Broad Street.

LOVE PARK saw demonstration Friday by activists organized to overturn Supreme Court ?Citizens United? decision that unleashed unlimited secret campaign funding. Speakers included Councilwoman Maria Qui?ones S?nchez, left; former State Rep. Babette Josephs, 2nd from left; and State Rep. Mark Cohen, 4th from left.

TEA PARTY GROUPS NOW AGAINST UNIONS

The Independence Hall Tea Party Association, the largest independent Tea Party group in the tri-state region, is supporting ?Pennsylvania Open Workforce Initiative.? It made its position at a press conference held by State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe (R-Butler), who is prime sponsor of a bill designed to weaken the state?s union membership.

Tea Party Association President Teri Adams declared, ?With a Republican legislature and a Republican Governor, it?s only logical that Right to Work legislation take center stage. If Pennsylvania becomes the 25th Right to Work state, the business climate should improve significantly.?

Resolving property line disputes | Real Estate | South Philly Review

What it takesr to win an adverse possession claim

Benny Kass
Inman News?

DEAR BENNY: My husband and I have owned our home since 1973. At the time we purchased the home, there was an existing fence between our neighbor's house and ours that we had assumed was on the property line.

Our current neighbors moved into their house in 2000. They recently had a "topographic survey" of their property performed for a proposed landscaping project. The survey shows that the fence is not on the property line, but that it extends in the range of approximately 2-4 feet at various points onto their side of the property line.

In response to this information, we searched our old records and found a "topographic site" map that was prepared for us in 1988 when we replaced a deck near that property line. According to the 1988 map, the fence extends approximately 2 feet onto their side of the property line in places.

Frankly, we didn't notice the discrepancy in 1988, probably because our 1988 project was contained well within the property line, and the fence and property line were not an issue. Both maps have the statement that "this is not a boundary survey" written on them.

Now the neighbors want some of their property back. The length of the fence is approximately 200 feet. They want to move a 50-foot portion in the middle of the fence, but near our house, back to the property line and leave the remainder of the fence as is. They also want us to sign a document acknowledging that the 150 or so feet of the remaining fence is on their property and they will, in turn, grant us an easement to use that 2- to 4-foot portion.

Our question is: What are their rights and what are our rights? Due to the length of time involved, do we own the extra 2-4 feet by virtue of adverse possession? --Linda

DEAR LINDA: My answer will have to be very general, because each state has different laws regarding adverse possession. In fact, I understand that some states have actually by law rejected the idea.

First, let's define that concept. The theory of the doctrine of adverse possession is that the person who holds or uses property adversely against the rightful owner should ultimately be entitled to own that property. But not every possession of land will turn into "fee simple" ownership. As the name of the doctrine implies, the possession must be adverse, hostile, actual, notorious, exclusive, continuous and under claim of right.

Needless to say, these sound like highly complex legal concepts, and to some extent they are. However, in the words of one judge, "The person claiming the property by adverse possession must unfurl his flag on the land and keep it flying so that the owner may see, if he wishes, that an enemy has invaded his domain and planted the flag of conquest."

I don't know where your house is located. The time required to prevail in a lawsuit for adverse possession differs from state to state. For example, in Maryland the term is 20 years, while in the District of Columbia and Virginia it is only 15 years.

But as I wrote earlier, litigation is time consuming, expensive and always uncertain. Talk with an attorney about your situation. The burden to prove that you meet the tests will fall upon you, although the existence of the fence will be very favorable in your case.

Your neighbor has made you an offer, which you should seriously consider. If you don't like all of the terms, counter with your own ideas. Many people would prefer to obtain a perpetual easement in the area in question rather than spend a year or two in court to get that same area of land.

DEAR BENNY: I paid off my mortgage in early October and now it's December and I have not heard from the bank. I guess I'll call them back after the first of the year if I've heard nothing by then. --Jack

DEAR JACK: First, make sure you have proof that you paid off your mortgage entirely. Lenders charge interest on a daily basis, and that interest will keep accruing until the bank/lender gets the entire amount. Do you have a receipt proving your payment?

When you obtain a mortgage (also called a deed of trust) it will be recorded among the land records in the county or city where your property is located. Once the mortgage has been paid off, a release of that loan must then be recorded in that same land records office. Different states use different forms -- some are called a release or a certificate of satisfaction. But the bottom line is: Some documents must be recorded showing the world that your loan has been paid off.

From my experience, lenders take one of two options: Some lenders will actually arrange to have a release recorded, while others will send the promissory note and deed of trust marked "paid and canceled" back to the property owner with instructions that the property owner must arrange to have the release recorded.

You should check with the bank as to what procedure it uses. And keep bugging the bank. Don't let this slip. You don't want to have to scramble to get this done down the road when you are trying to sell your house. At that time, your lender may not even be in business, and that will be a major hassle for you.

The Art of Gaming in the Context of Contemporary Art

gameroom1

An installation view of Game Room, with a view to Wilshire Blvd. (All photos courtesy the Hammer Museum)

LOS ANGELES ? Games are everywhere these days. We keep them in our phones, our computers, our television sets. Where once we could content ourselves with a small selection of board games and a pack of cards, we now have a myriad of games at our fingertips, ready to download or purchase at a moment?s notice.

But what makes for a good game? Why do we gravitate toward some games and quickly tire of others? Game design as a field has evolved a highly detailed understanding of gaming, and gaming as a whole is starting to shift away from the stereotype of the pimply male nerd in his parent?s basement.

Game Room, a special exhibition at the Hammer Museum, asks us to revisit games in a less electronic format and start to look at game design in the context of contemporary art. In Sarah Brin?s accompanying essay, ?The Aesthetics of Play,? she notes that the show wants to emphasize ?the values of process, interpersonal dynamics, and participation.?

gameroom2

A close-up of Eddo Stern?s Moneymakingworskhop.

?Let?s say I have my phone in here right now,? said Allison Agsten, curator of Public Engagement, in an interview with Hyperallergic, ?and let?s say, six years ago, I said, ?How many games are in this room??, perhaps you?d say six, because that?s how many we have in here.? The ubiquity of games has changed dramatically, she noted, pointing at 2007 as the introduction of the iPhone and the transformation of the field as ubiquitous gaming meant that gamers were no longer glued to Game Boys and Palm Pilots.

The show features works by artists like Noa P. Kaplan, Sarah Bay Williams, Alexis Smith, and Eddo Stern. For those familiar with the recent works of Stern, a prolific video game designer and artist, this particular installation stands out for its lack of electronics or projections.? His ?Moneymakingworkshop? consists of a complex series of rules and repetitions around making making money by pounding them out of gold foil. Remnants of previous games lay scattered beneath the table.

?There?s no clear win state,? Agsten noted of most of the games. Sitting next to us during the interview was a pack of Alexis Smith?s ?Playing Cards, Made in USA.??It?s striking to see a pack of playing cards, which I?ve not played for years, and note that it?s handheld nature makes it about the size and weight of a mobile phone. The cards themselves feature quotes from Walt Whitman?s ?Leaves of Grass? and is skinned to represent moments from American history, in contrast to the monarchy images of traditional cards. Ironically, Agsten pointed out that the cards were handled less than Stern?s installation, perhaps a sign that visitors felt hesitant to open the pack and lose a card.

My attention turned to Samara Smith?s ?Chain Reaction (Westwood),? with Situationist instructions for walking around the Westwood neighborhood that surrounds the Hammer. ?When I played this game, I saw the neighborhood in a way I hadn?t seen it in a while,? Agsten explained. It was originally designed for Brooklyn, but I felt it had greater resonance in a city like Los Angeles, where the idea of strolling can seem foreign.

gameroom3

What would a Situationist derive look like in Los Angeles? Samara Smith provides cards for exploration.

?She adapted it for Westwood, and originally what she calls the release object, one of them was graffiti. So when I was walking around play testing it, I said, oh my god, we don?t have any graffiti here.? It was a notable change from Westwood?s earlier years and perhaps indicative of the city?s general tendency to forget rather than enshrine its history (captured so well in Norman Klein?s History of Forgetting).

450-1-320

One of Sarah Bay Williams?s papier mach? pi?atas.

Smith?s Westwood-specific release objects now include a ?handmade object,? an independent business, and a ?for lease sign,? all of which have resonance in a neighborhood in regular flux as it commercializes swiftly. When a visitor sees a release object, they?re allowed to wander the neighborhood freely until they encounter a ?lead object,? which include a Starbucks cup, a Target bag, and a Subway bag.

Game Room?as a whole is higly participatory and tactile. Situated in a museum like the Hammer, it may not seem approachable, but Agsten noted that visitors, especially children, felt comfortable with picking up and playing with the objects. As Sarah Brin noted in her essay on the works:

Of all the activities that are enacted in a museum, looking might be cited as the most important ? or at least the most common. There is a tendency to regard artworks as static objects and to believe that the museumgoer?s role is to visually examine them. After an item is viewed, some observers will arrive at an evaluative conclusion based on context as well as their personal preferences and associations.

Artists who design games, on the other hand, can create something more tactile and personal, and, as Brin notes, ?bridge the gap between creators and their publics.?

The most tempting piece, Sarah Bay Williams?s ?Pi?atas: Recreational Items from Unfortunate Events,? hangs tantalizingly above the room, with references to classic games like badminton and kick the can. A bat hangs nearby but is secured tightly to the wall. On the last day of the installation, February 17, the museum will host a pi?ata smashing. What?s inside? With an artist designing the objects, you can bet it won?t be the usual assortment of candies.

Game Room?runs at the Hammer Museum (10899 Wilshire Boulevard, Westwood Village, Los Angeles)?until February 17.

Feeling flirty? Wait for the sun to shine

Jan. 28, 2013 ? We all know how casual flirtation can lift one's mood, which can be important at this time of year when the winter blues are at their peak. But if you are more serious about your flirting and hope to get that all important phone number, you're better off waiting until it's sunny, according to new French research published in the journal Social Influence.

Nicolas Gu?guen of the University of South Brittany -- who has previously investigated how wearing red lipstick can increase a waitress' tips -- conducted a study in which an 'attractive' 20 year old male approached 18-25 year old women walking alone in the street and asked them for their phone numbers. The women were solicited on both sunny and cloudy (but not rainy) days, when the temperature was about the same.

In the past other environmental factors have been found to make people more likely to flirt or exchange phone numbers -- the presence of pleasant smells, romantic music or certain colours have all been found to have an effect.

Previous research has also shown how the weather can affect certain social behaviours -- sunshine makes people more likely to help strangers or answer a survey, and people tend to leave bigger tips in restaurants on sunny days. But this is the first research to explore how the weather may influence courtship or dating behaviour.

It was found that women were more receptive to being approached and flirted with -- and give out their phone numbers -- on sunny days: over a fifth -- 22.4% -- of women did so when the sun was out, as opposed to 13.9% on the cloudy days.

(The phone numbers were later used to contact the women and tell them the true nature of the study, as per the recommendation of the ethics committee of the lab which reviewed the project!)

The message seems clear: flirting is more likely to have a positive outcome on sunny days. But Professor Gu?guen was careful to include certain caveats regarding the applicability of the research to everyday situations: the sunshine (or other factors) may after all have improved the attractive 20 year old male's flirting skills on those days. Other atmospheric conditions such as windiness or humidity were not accounted for. And, perhaps most crucially, the research was conducted in France, where 'men traditionally approach women in romantic relationships'.

The journal article concludes with suggestions for further study in this area -- for instance, are men themselves more likely to initiate flirting behaviour when the sun is shining? We'll have to wait until the Spring to find out!

DURHAM, N.C. -- Patients with early stage breast cancer who were treated with lumpectomy plus radiation may have a better chance of survival compared with those who underwent mastectomy, according to Duke Medicine research.

The study, which appears online Jan. 28, 2013, in the journal Cancer, raises new questions as to the comparative effectiveness of breast-conserving therapies such as lumpectomy, where only the tumor and surrounding tissue is surgically removed.

Our findings are observational but do suggest the possibility that women who were treated with less invasive surgery had improved survival compared to those treated with mastectomy for stage I or stage II breast cancer, said E. Shelley Hwang, M.D., MPH, chief of breast surgery at Duke Cancer Institute and the studys lead author.

Taking advantage of 14 years of data from the California Cancer Registry, a source of long-term outcome data for women diagnosed with and treated for breast cancer in California, the research team found improved survival to be associated with the less invasive treatment in all age groups, as well as those with both hormone-sensitive and hormone-resistant cancers. Women age 50 and older at diagnosis with hormone-sensitive tumors saw the largest benefit of choosing lumpectomy plus radiation: they were 13 percent less likely to die from breast cancer, and 19 percent less likely to die from any cause compared with those undergoing mastectomy.

Prior randomized trials have shown that when it comes to survival, lumpectomy with radiation is as effective as mastectomy in treating early stage breast cancer. As a result, the rate of women electing lumpectomy with radiation has climbed in the past few decades.

However, a recent trend has emerged with more early stage breast cancer patients, often younger women with very early cancers, opting for mastectomy. These women may perceive mastectomy to be more effective at eliminating early stage cancer and therefore reducing the anxiety accompanying long-term surveillance.

Given the recent interest in mastectomy to treat early stage breast cancers despite the research supporting lumpectomy, our study sought to understand what was happening in the real world, how women receiving breast-conserving treatments were faring in the general population, Hwang said.

The team analyzed data from 112,154 women diagnosed with stage I or stage II breast cancer between 1990 and 2004, including 61,771 who received lumpectomy and radiation and 50,383 who had mastectomy without radiation.

The researchers looked at age and other demographic factors, along with tumor type and size to decipher whether each treatment had better outcomes for certain groups of women. Patients were followed on average for 9.2 years.

The researchers evaluated whether illnesses other than breast cancer, such as heart and respiratory disease, may have influenced whether women chose lumpectomy or mastectomy. Within three years of diagnosis, breast cancer patients who underwent lumpectomy and radiation had higher survival rates than those who chose mastectomy when all other illnesses were evaluated. This suggests that women choosing lumpectomy may have been generally healthier.

However, Hwang and her colleagues were surprised to also find that early stage breast cancer patients treated with breast-conserving treatment had a significantly better short-term survival rate from breast cancer than women who underwent mastectomy. A subset analysis limited to women with stage I cancer only showed consistent results.

The hopeful message is that lumpectomy plus radiation was an effective alternative to mastectomy for early stage disease, regardless of age or tumor type, said Hwang. Our study supports that even patients we thought might benefit less from localized treatment, like younger patients with hormone-resistant disease, can remain confident in lumpectomy as an equivalent and possibly better treatment option.

The authors emphasize that observational studies such as this one cannot establish causality between type of surgery and outcome and that longer follow up is needed. Nevertheless, this is a provocative observation that requires more research to understand whether patient factors that were not available for analysis might contribute to these observed survival differences.

In addition to Hwang, study authors include Daphne Y. Lichtensztajn, Scarlett Lin Gomez, and Christina A. Clarke of the Cancer Prevention Institute of California. Barbara Fowble of the University of California San Francisco Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center also contributed to the research.

The study was supported by National Cancer Institutes Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results Program (HHSN261201000140C) awarded to the Cancer Prevention Institute of California. The collection of cancer incidence data used in this study was supported by the California Department of Health Services.

The number of people in England adding salt to food at the table fell by more than a quarter in the five years following a national campaign, according to research published in the British Journal of Nutrition.

In 2003, the UK Food Standards Agency and the Department of Health launched a national salt reduction campaign to raise public awareness of the impact of salt on health and to work with the food industry to reduce the amount of salt in processed foods.

Although previous research found that the national campaign led to an overall reduction in salt intake, this is the first study to look directly at the effect it had on the amount of salt people add to their food at the table.

Researchers from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine looked at salt intake from 1997-2007 in large nationally-representative samples of more than 6,000 adults living in England. They found that since the campaign launched in 2003, the proportion of people reporting that they add salt at the table dropped from 32.5% to 23.2% in the following five years.

Lead author Jennifer Sutherland from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, said: "Salt use at the table accounts for 15-20% of total salt intake. Our study shows that from 1997-2007 there was a steady decline in salt use at the table, but this reduction was greater after the introduction of the salt reduction campaign in 2003."

Researchers also found differences in the amount of salt added at the table by different population groups. Women were less likely to add salt at the table, as were those from younger age groups, non-white ethnic groups, higher income households and people living in central or south England.

Co-author Dr Alan Dangour, a nutritionist at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine said: "These findings indicate a need to tailor future salt reduction efforts to specific target groups. More work is needed as a quarter of adults still add salt at the table and salt intake levels in the UK remain well above the recommended amount of 6g per day. Eating too much salt can lead to raised blood pressure, which increases the risk of heart disease and stroke."

PlayerScale Says Its Gaming Infrastructure Is Being Used By 100M ...

PlayerScale, which provides a range of backend services for game developers, is announcing today that its platform now has more than 100 million players.

Since PlayerScale is building the infrastructure rather than the games themselves, it?s unlikely that many of those 100 million actually think of themselves as ?PlayerScale users,? or are necessarily aware of the platform at all. Nonetheless, the announcement suggests that PlayerScale?s tools are being used by a broad audience of gamers. (CEO Jesper Jensen told me that users create in-game profiles and log in through Facebook, so while it?s possible that there are a few ?repeats,? for the most part these are unique users.)

The company?s offerings include integration with payments systems, multiplayer support, in-game chat, data management, and player matchmaking. It?s supposed to work on console, browser-based, PC/Mac, and mobile games. Jensen said the company focuses on ?the convergence of content from these sectors ? mobile, social and casual.?

PlayerScale image

PlayerScale is now being implemented across 4,000 games from more than 2,600 game developers, including SGN (Social Gaming Network, which has put a big emphasis on cross-platform development), Con Artist Games and 505 Games. One of the big goals, Jensen said, is to allow developers to focus on the creative aspects of game development, rather than the backend infrastructure.

The company was founded in 2011. It is self-funded and cash-flow positive.

PlayerScale? develops software infrastructure for cross-platform gaming. Their backend software gives gaming publishers and aggregators the ability to scale titles across casual, social and mobile platforms in a rapid and seamless manner.

Australia Day message from the Samuel Griffith Society - Michael ...

President?s Australia Day Message
Hon Ian Callinan AC

26th January, 2013

?

?

It seems as if each year the Constitution and the cohesion of our Australian community are put at some new and entirely unnecessary risk.? The dangers of the current one, of the introduction of a new law to criminalize speech which might cause offence to anyone, should not be underestimated.? Even the imaginative powers of George Orwell would not have conceived of an administration that would dare to try to forbid every member of society from passing adverse comment upon any other member of it.? The proposed law is such a silly one that it will turn everyone into offenders.? A law of this kind fails the elementary test of rational, consistent, and worse,?undiscriminating application.? In consequence, the cases selected for prosecution will be exactly that, ?selected?, that is to say, carefully chosen, under the influence or pressure of the most vociferous pressure groups.? Every Australian with an ideal of democracy - and I hope that means most Australians - should do everything they lawfully can to oppose the introduction of this outrageous law.? I remain optimistic however that if good political sense does not prevail, and the law is enacted, it will not survive the scrutiny of the courts.

?

I wish all Australians a happy and prosperous 2013, after the difficult years that we have experienced, since the GFC.

?

The Hon I D F Callinan AC

President

'REST IN PEACE' ? Just for a while

Most of Southern Italy is very mountainous and this makes arable land very precious for growing crops and grazing animals. It leaves very little land suitable for cemeteries? and burials.cimitero-francese-venafro-01

Prior to Napoleon?s conquering of Italy bodies were interred in the crypt below the church floor. There was a strict order for the placing of the bodies. Babies and children were placed to the left of the altar (on the floor above), with women towards the back but still on the left. The rich and important were placed to the right of the altar with the common men at the back, on the right. As the bodies decayed, the bones and ashes were gathered and placed in a common vault. The rich and powerful might be permitted a vault in the church itself and this certainly happened in the larger churches. It usually involved building a side chapel at the family?s expense. If you are visiting old churches in Italy look on the floor for the old entrance to the crypt usually a square manhole with a ring at the center.

Note: when you are in Rome visit the Crypt of Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini (visit the Via Veneto area) is worth a visit if you?re interested in seeing some works of art made from the bones of more than 4000 dead monks.DSCN6859

Napoleon believed it was unhealthy to have bodies decaying below the church floor and ordered them cleared and moved to a cemetery outside the town limits. Of course now the towns have grown many are within the limits but in smaller towns they are still situated a distance from the town.

Burials usually take place within 24 hours of death unless there are special circumstances. Since many small towns do not have daily newspapers posters are printed and posted all over the town within hours of the death. If the deceased died at home the vigil would take place there with family members coming and going all through the night. If the death took place in the hospital then the body is not allowed to be taken home and the ?wake? tales place in the hospital in a special room set aside for the purpose. The deceased then goes directly to the church with a detour past their home for a short prayer before the mass and interment.

Cremation isn?t popular in Italy because the Catholic Church favors burial. However, it was an ancient Roman custom and it was introduced again in the early 1800?s under Napoleon for ?hygienic reasons? and discontinued after he was ousted.

Much more common is the placing of the deceased in a ?niche? for a period of up to 30 years after which the ashes and bones are removed and placed in the ?ossario? or bone vault. This can be a family vault or a communal vault. Niches are leased for periods of 30 to 99 years and can be used several times or just once. If the lease is renewed the deceased can continue to ?rest in peace? until the lease runs out and the ashes are removed. My father-in-law died several years ago after purchasing a 99 year lease on a ?niche? in the new part of the cemetery. He left a handwritten will which stated in no uncertain terms that he was to be left undisturbed until the lease ran out or he would put a curse on the person who disobeyed these instructions. This presented a dilemma for the family. Who would take responsibility for his ashes 99 years from now? Even his Great Grandchildren would probably not be around in 99 years and who would remember him and his curse?.

Most cemeteries have some in-ground burial plots for the poor who cannot afford to lease a ?niche?. Since a body decomposes much more quickly in the ground these plots can be reused after as little as 10 years.

Most niches and burial plots today have a photo of the deceased together with their name and dates (or years) of birth and death. These niches are regularly tended and adorned with fresh flowers. November 2nd is the National Day of the Dead (All souls day) with families gathering and touring the various locations and saying the traditional prayers. It is not unusual for family gatherings to happen that weekend, much like the American Thanksgiving.
Chrysanthemums are often used at funerals and in memory of the dead in Europe. When Grace Kelly was newly married she didn?t realize this and put a vase of these flowers on a guest?s bedside table. Prince Ranier was very upset and berated her. ?Don?t you know that these flowers symbolize death in Europe?? he said.

I know how she felt having bought Chrysanthemums to take to a dying relative of my husband. When he saw what I had chosen he did a ?donut? in the parking lot and ordered me to return them and choose something else.

All of the above means that unless your ancestor is rich or famous it is unlikely you will find a grave for them in Southern Italy. However, if you have a relative who died in Italy during WW2 and is buried there you probably will find their grave. Italian communities gave up precious land to create cemeteries equal to anything you might find in North America and they are tended lovingly by the population for whom they gave their lives.

Demagnetization by rapid spin transport

Jan. 27, 2013 ? For purposes of their research, the scientists irradiated two separate layered systems with ultrashort laser pulses on the order of just one hundred femtoseconds (10-15 s). One sample consisted essentially of a single thin layer of ferromagnetic nickel. By contrast, a second sample of this same nickel material was coated with a non-magnetic layer of gold. Only a mere 30 nanometers (10-9 m) thick, the gold layer swallowed up the lion's share of the laser light so that barely any light ended up reaching the nickel layer. In spite of this, the nickel layer's magnetization rapidly dissipated shortly after the laser pulse entered each sample.

However, in the case of the gold-coated sample, the researchers recorded a split-second delay. The observations were based on measurements obtained using circularly polarized femtosecond x-ray pulses at BESSY II, Berlin's own electron storage ring, with the help of the femtoslicing beamline.

"This allowed us to demonstrate experimentally that during this process, it isn't the light itself that is responsible for the ultrafast demagnetization but rather hot electrons, which are generated by the laser pulse," explains Andrea Eschenlohr. Excited electrons are able to rapidly move across short distances -- like the ultra-thin gold layer. In the process, they also deliver their magnetic moment (their "spin") to the ferromagnetic nickel layer, prompting the breakdown of the latter's magnetic order. "Actually, what we had hoped to see is how we might be able to influence the spin using the laser pulse," explains Dr. Christian Stamm, who heads the experiment. "The fact that we ended up being able to directly observe how these spins migrate was a complete surprise to everyone."

Laser pulses are thus one possibility to generate "spin currents" where the spin is transferred in place of an electric charge. This observation is relevant for spintronics research where scientists design new devices from magnetic layered systems, which perform calculations based on spins rather than electrons, enabling them to very quickly process and store information while at the same time saving energy.

Dr. Eschenlohr concluded her doctoral work at HZB, in the context of which she generated the results described above, in late 2012. As of January of this year, Dr. Eschenlohr is a scientific associate at University of Duisburg-Essen.

Baby Doe Tabor Bedroom Set | blog.antiques.com

January 25th, 2013 by Admin

Baby Doe TaborKnown as the ?Baby Doe Tabor suite?, this set was purchased by U. S. Senator Horace ?Silver Dollar? Tabor. Owning incredible silver mines in Colorado, he was also one of the wealthiest men in the world.? Known as the ?Silver King?, he created quite the scandal when, while still married, he fell in love with Elizabeth McCourt, also known as Baby Doe, a beautiful woman many years his junior.? As the story goes, the Senator bought the suite during their Honeymoon in Philadelphia for his bride. It was brought back to Colorado (where Tabor lived) and installed in their house where family history had it that President Ulysses S. Grant slept in it.

Tabor was heavily leveraged and in 1890 when the Sherman Silver purchase act was passed, silver prices dropped and Tabor unfortunately lost all of his money. There are actually stories of him becoming a miner in his own mine in order to survive. Despite being broke, Horace and Baby Doe stayed together and were still very much in love in 1899 when Horace died. Numerous books, an Opera, as well as a MGM movie were done on her life as she was one of the most fascinating personages of her day.

The suite?s exceptional history did not stop with the Tabors. After Horace?s death, Baby Doe sold the set to the famed William Randolph Hearst. He kept it until approximately 1930 when he gave it to his publisher Dr. Barham for his Santa Ynez, New Mexico ranch, which he shared with Hearst.

The suite is primarily made of finally carved and burled walnut and was almost certainly crafted by the great Philadelphia cabinetmaker Daniel Pabst. It is one of two great sets he made, the other exhibited at the 1876 Philadelphia ?World?s Fair? and now at Saganore Hill Museum, President Theodore Roosevelt?s Oyster Bay home. The bed, which will perfectly hold a modern queen size mattress, has upon its cornice nocturnal animals such as owls and bats. Its footboard holds hidden compartments and overall it is a stunning example of aesthetic art. It stands 104? high. The dresser, which is equally as impressive, displays hummingbirds and other daytime animals in its cornice. It also has drawers for jewelry as well as a unique pull out shelf to lay out the day?s accessories. It stands an impressive 115? high.

In all of our experience, we have never seen another suite equal to this one. It is not only extraordinary; but it also has one of the most interesting provenances of any object we have ever offered. I would love for you consider this masterpiece. Our toll free number is 1-800-544-9440. Can we tempt you?

Dresser: 62 3/4? wide x 27? deep x 107? high
Bed: 65 3/8? wide x 92 1/2? deep x 104? high

Sincerely,

Susan
