TO THE EDITOR: Candidate says Taylor mayor is not telling truth about treasurer?s pension

To the Editor: To the residents of Taylor, a few weeks ago I sent a letter to the editor in response to lies that were being told by one of the candidates regarding benefits I would receive if elected treasurer. Now, Mayor Jeffrey Lamarand wrote a letter to the editor basically saying I was lying and that I will receive pension enhancement and lifetime health care if elected.

The letter he wrote is a blatant lie. Any newly elected or appointed officials are no longer eligible to receive a pension or health care in retirement. The only benefits the new mayor, clerk or treasurer will receive is compensation and health care while they are in office.

The City Council voted in 2011 to remove the pension and lifetime health care for all newly elected officials. I have served this community for 16 years and I am always truthful with you. Two councilwomen voted to leave the benefits in; I joined the four other council members in voting to remove them.

Listed below is the amended section of the Taylor Code Ordinance that was adopted Aug. 2, 2011. Section 2-80

(a) says: ?No elected or appointed official shall increase their accrued pension benefits, including their final average compensation for pension purposes, if elected or appointed to a different elective office after July 19, 2011. Such personal service rendered in this different elective office shall not be credited to that individual's service credit account for any pension benefit purpose, including any increase in his/her final average compensation and/or any and all pension benefits.?

I ask that you continue to believe in me and elect me as your treasurer.

Jacklyn Molner

Taylor councilwoman

(Editor?s note: Councilwoman Jacklyn Molner is one of three candidates running for the Taylor treasurer?s post in Tuesday?s primary election. The two highest vote-getters will move on to the Nov. 5 general election. Her letter to the editor is in response to a recent letter from Mayor Jeffrey Lamarand that appeared in The News-Herald Newspapers.)

5 Quick and Easy Ways To Wiping Out Obstacles To Goal ...

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

goalsLife is nothing but an obstacle course, its all about getting through that obstacle course *successfully* to your desired goal that most people seem to have a problem with.

And it?s only normal to encounter these obstacles in the pursuit of your goal.

It?s kind of a test to see if your worthy.

However, when these obstacles start to become a nuisance to the point of almost putting a stop to your goal(s); or worse, making one completely abandon his/her goal, one must take action and think things through.

So, with that said, here are some helpful, tested pointers that will keep your attention focused in achieving any goal that you put your mind to.

Step #1. Think positive.

This means: Do not quit. Especially when one is midway in working for a goal, there should be no room for quitting.

To quit is tantamount to going back to the starting line of goal accomplishment. That is time, energy, money, and a whole lot of things wasted and lost. It is more costly to quit than to find a solution to the problem, not to mention the frustration one feels.

Step #2. Keep a clear, open and tense-free mind.

Always be ready to receive new ideas. Focus and concentrate. Think on a wide scale manner and always be open for options(even unconventional ones) to eliminate the particular obstacle you are currently dealing with.

Step #3. Persist and Persevere.

Be sure to exhaust every possibility, even to the point of trial and error, just to be sure that there is a solution to correct the problem your dealing with.

Step #4. Simulate.

Try to picture inside your head a possible solution to help overcome and/or solve the obstacle that?s setting you back.

Step #5. Get assistance.

If all fails get assistance from other you know who are more knowledgeable on the work being done. They may be able to help you or not. Their suggestions might not necessarily be the right or exact ones you were hoping to hear, but they may trigger some NEW ideas in finding the right solution to your problem.

Those are the basic 5 steps to overcoming any obstacle that?s holding you back.

But? before I go I?d like you to consider this scenario as an example.

Let?s say you thought of a COOL new product and you are confident and excited that this product will be sell-able to your target market once it hits the market.

You then go tell a friend about it, but your friend says that your product would be waste of time and money.

Your friend also tells you why it will be such a flop and gives your their reason why as follows:

?If your product idea is to be a success, how come nobody else is doing it??

Does this sound familiar?

With that being said you decide that your friend is right and forget about your new product idea because of your friend?s comment.

This exact scenario happens all the time all over the world.

Don?t fall victim to this.

You are your own person with your own opinions and beliefs.

Though it is good to hear other peoples opinions and their reasons, what really matters the most is yours in the end based on the information you have received and researched.

So the lesson here is, be firm in your beliefs and follow your heart and minds desire.

You just never know what the outcome might be.

Woolwich Murder Suspect Is a ?Freedom Fighter,? Says Islamist Leader Banned from U.K.

To most people who watched the widely distributed video of Michael Adebolajo standing in a London street on May 22 talking into the camera of a passer-by while holding a meat cleaver that he had allegedly just used to help kill a British soldier, the young man is, at best, a suspected murderer. At worst, he?s a terrorist.?In the eyes of Omar Bakri, Adebolajo is ?a freedom fighter.?

?From an Islamic perspective he is fighting back against the soldiers who are committing crimes against Iraq,? Bakri told TIME in a telephone interview from Lebanon on May 29. Bakri is the founder of an Islamist group named al-Muhajiroun. He and another former leader of the group, Anjem Choudary, say that Adebolajo attended meetings of al-Muhajiroun.?Adebolajo was ?shy and quiet? when he attended al-Muhajiroun rallies in 2003 and 2004, Bakri said.

(MORE:?London Terror Attack: Names, Family Tragedy and Deepening Mystery)

Al-Muhajiroun is now illegal in the U.K. but experts say that in spite of being outlawed and even without its hardline founder to guide it in person (Bakri has not been in the U.K. since 2005), the group?s members continue to meet and espouse an extremist vision of Islam that celebrates terrorist attacks. The?horrific murder of 25-year-old Drummer Lee Rigby and the revelation soon after that Adebolajo had links to al-Muhajiroun reignited concerns in Britain about the role that extremist groups play in radicalizing young British Muslims. Many Muslim groups across Britain have been quick to denounce the crime, as well as the ideals al-Muhajiroun and Adebolajo have espoused.

Adebolajo quickly became the public face of the attack after the footage from the scene showed him apparently discussing the murder with the passer-by who held the camera. ?We swear to you, by the almighty Allah, we will never stop fighting you until you leave us alone,? he tells the camera, his hands apparently soaked with blood. Adebolajo, 28, along with his alleged accomplice, 22-year-old Michael Adebowale, was later shot by armed police at the scene and taken to the hospital under armed surveillance. Adebowale has since been released from hospital and charged with murder and the possession of an illegal firearm.

Bakri founded al-Muhajiroun in 1983 in Saudi Arabia. The group was later banned from the country and Bakri relocated to Britain. He relaunched al-Muhajiroun in 1996 with the help of Choudary, a British then-solicitor. The group gained notoriety in 2003 when it staged rallies celebrating the 9/11 hijackers, calling them the ?Magnificent 19,? before disbanding in 2004, apparently in anticipation of being outlawed by the British government. But the group is thought to have continued operating under various different names. Bakri himself left the U.K. for Lebanon in 2005. He was subsequently barred from returning by British authorities. When al-Muhajiroun reestablished itself publicly in 2009 under Choudary?s leadership British authorities officially banned it and its successors.

(MORE:?Exclusive: Away from Domestic Pressures, British P.M. Cameron Chillaxes with TIME)

Throughout its existence al-Muhajiroun?s leaders insisted it was a non-violent organization. Even while declaring support for Adebolajo, Bakri insists that although the young suspect ?did once upon a time participate in our public activities, we don?t teach people to remove other people?s heads.?

Doug Weeks, an expert in radical groups at St. Andrew?s University, describes al-Muhajiroun as an extremist organization but says that the group does not explicity incite violence. ?I think it?s important to note is that this is an ideological movement,? Weeks says. ?It?s basically a religious social movement. It?s very porous. People kind of come in and hang out for a bit and then pop out the other side.?

(MORE:?Terror in London Sparks Tensions, Upsurge in Islamophobic Attacks)

But Usama Hasan, a senior researcher at Quilliam Foundation, a counter-extremism think tank, says Islamist extremist groups like al-Muhajiroun can plant seeds of violence without explicitly inciting it: ?Even though they?re not violent, a lot of their ideas cause division and hatred in society in terms of discrimination and the idea that Muslims are superior.?

The murder in Woolwich, however, isn?t the first act of violence committed by people connected to the group. According to a study published in 2011 by the Henry Jackson Society, a conservative think tank based in London, 24 out of 134 terrorists convicted in the U.K. between 1998 and 2010 ? or nearly one in five ? were either members of al-Muhajiroun or had known links to the group. Hannah Stuart, a research fellow at the Henry Jackson Society and a co-author of the study, told TIME that since the study was published, ?it looks as though that sort of one in five estimate has roughly continued.??Last month, three British men were convicted of engaging in conduct in preparation of acts of terrorism; one of those men was Richard Dart, a convert to Islam who was shown on camera studying under al-Muhajiroun?s former leader Choudary in a 2011 BBC documentary, ?My Brother the Islamist.?

In 2005, the then-Labour Party government of Tony Blair established an anti-radicalization campaign named ?Prevent;? the program was designed to improve relations between authorities and Muslim community leaders. Funding to the program was cut in 2011 under the coalition government of Conservative Party leader David Cameron ? a move that has since drawn sharp criticism. Days after Rigby?s death, Hazel Blears, a Labour MP and member of Britain?s Parliamentary Intelligence and Security Committee, told the Guardian: ?Counter-extremism isn?t just about tackling the people you already know are radicalized. It is about trying to work with local communities before they get to that point so that good decent people in the community can protect young people from being groomed and getting these ideas in the first place.?

And wholesale banning of extremist groups like al-Muhajiroun hasn?t appeared to stop them from operating either. ?These guys have been around for a long, long time at this point and are quite resilient,? says Weeks. ?So one of the issues becomes, if proscription is intended to prevent them from assembling and doing what they do, the evidence would suggest that it?s not really an effective mechanism.?

Bakri?s comments about Adebolajo and the killing of Rigby are anathema to the majority of Muslims in Britain. Bakri insists his ?sect has nothing to do with the majority of those [Muslims] speaking out? and says, somewhat vaguely, he will do what he can to help Adebolajo. More forcefully, he warns against any retaliation on his ?brothers in the U.K.?, saying, ?believe me, it?s going to make the people wake up and there?s going to be devastation for everybody.?

Obama says Democrats could win back U.S. House in 2014

By Roberta Rampton

CHICAGO (Reuters) - President Barack Obama, whose agenda has been frustrated by Republicans in Washington, said on Wednesday he believed his party could reclaim control of the House of Representatives in the 2014 midterm elections but conceded it was an uphill struggle.

The party in power in the White House typically loses seats in the first midterm election after a presidential campaign, and many political analysts believe Democrats could lose seats in Congress in 2014.

But Obama, appearing at fundraisers for Democratic House candidates in his hometown of Chicago, said he believed 2014 could prove different.

"We've got a great chance to take back the House," he told more than 100 people gathered at a cocktail reception in an ornate ballroom at the Chicago Hilton, where ticket prices ranged from $1,000 per person to $5,000 per couple.

Obama, who was reelected in 2012, told donors that he is willing to work with Republicans on issues like creating jobs through national infrastructure programs, but said he has a hard time finding Republican lawmakers willing to compromise.

"We've got a politics that is stuck right now. And the reason it's stuck is because people spend more time thinking about the next election than they do thinking about the next generation," Obama said.

Obama said he is willing to work with Republicans, who currently control the House, but accused them of "obstructionism" and "an interest only in scoring political points or placating a base."

It was the fifth time since April that Obama has traveled to raise money for Democrats running for Congress in 2014.

In Chicago, about 70 people paid $10,000 per person or $32,400 per couple to attend dinner in the sculpture-filled apartment of Bettylu and Paul Saltzman, longtime Chicago Democratic activists and some of Obama's earliest political benefactors.

Obama told the group, which he described as "kind of an Obama cabal," that a Democratic-controlled House is key to achieving goals he views as his legacy, like curbing climate change and gun violence.

"My only interest is making sure that when I look back 20 years from now, I say, 'I accomplished everything that I could while I had this incredible privilege to advance the interests of the broadest number of Americans,'" he said.

But he admitted winning back the House won't be easy.

"This will be hard," he said, blaming "gerrymandering" or the redistricting process which many Democratic groups have said unfairly benefits Republicans.

First Lady Michelle Obama also spoke at two Democratic fundraisers on Wednesday in Manhattan.

"We need all of you to get engaged in every special election and every midterm election all across this country," she told donors who paid between $5,000 and $25,000 to attend a fundraiser in the Manhattan apartment of fashion designer Tory Burch.

"We need you to keep on writing those checks and, if you haven't maxed out, max out. Get your friends to max out," she said, referring to caps on donations set by U.S. election law.

At a Park Avenue gala with about 350 people who paid $1,250 to $32,400 to attend, the first lady was introduced by basketball player Jason Collins, who recently came out as the nation's first openly gay major professional sports player.

94% Room 237

All Critics (117) | Top Critics (31) | Fresh (111) | Rotten (7) | DVD (1)

The human brain is a marvellously suggestible organ.

[A] strange, frustrating, occasionally fascinating doc ...

"Room 237" evolves from an ode to movie love at its most delirious to a wry examination of the crackpot mind at work.

There's enough real evidence supporting the theory that Kubrick was a genius, and that's pretty entertaining all by itself.

It's about the human need for stuff to make sense - especially overpowering emotional experiences - and the tendency for some people to take that sense-making to extremes.

The results can range from enlightening - Kubrick did like to mess with things - to embarrassing. But it's never dull. "Room 237" shines.

It has the same entertainment value as listening to a late-night radio host indulge his listeners on Roswell, Area 51 and 9/11. Everything sounds completely crackers, until it all makes crazy sense.

What emerges from Room 237 is not a denigration of conspiracies, but a kind of celebration of our ability to create patterns where (perhaps) none exist.

"Room 237" could become an essential companion piece to "The Shining" from now on. For those who see both, it will be impossible to think about one without the other.

...all about the work of criticism - finding fresh avenues of delight.

Watching it makes you feel like you're attending a really entertaining film class where your classmates confidently let their freak flags fly.

It's an essay about the human need to reject the notion of a random universe and find order and meaning in existence. These people are developing their own creation myths, with Kubrick the mastermind responsible for the Intelligent Design.

Termitic film nerds could chow down for years on the wood chips.

You know when "Room 237? starts getting really scary? When the people in the film start making sense.

Kubrick fans and movie geeks will want to check this film out as soon as possible

Kubrick fans will take 'Shining' to 'Room 237.'

The credibility of these theories ranges from faintly plausible to frankly ridiculous, but Ascher isn't interested in judging them; his movie is more about the joys of deconstruction and the special kind of obsession that movies can inspire.

Some of the interpretations seem more of a stretch than others but all are entertainingly presented by director Rodney Ascher. (The movie) serves as a testament to Stanley Kubrick's cinematic mastery.

As fascinating as it is frustrating

It is nice to see a doc that makes you smile instead of making you angry. Anyone who is a fan of Stanley Kubrick will eat this up.

Powered by a deep and abiding affection for both The Shining and Kubrick in general, Room 237 is an amuse-bouche of remix culture.

Derailment, blast crumple buildings near Baltimore

WHITE MARSH, Md. (AP) ? The fire chief says no toxic inhalants are burning at the site of a freight train derailment outside Baltimore.

Baltimore County Fire Chief John J. Hohman said at a news conference Tuesday that fire crews would let the fire on two remaining cars burn out.

CSX spokesman Gary Sease says in an email that sodium chlorate is on one of the trains.

He says the Department of Transportation classifies it as a hazardous material.

But Hohman says the chemical is not in one of the cars that is burning. Fire officials did not order an evacuation.

They had advised anyone within 20 blocks who can see the smoke to leave but said later people could stay.

The derailment in White Marsh led to an explosion that rattled homes at least a half-mile away and collapsed nearby buildings.

Kerry, Lavrov meet to discuss Syrian peace talks

By Arshad Mohammed and John Irish

PARIS (Reuters) - The U.S. and Russian foreign ministers met on Monday to discuss a planned conference aimed at ending Syria's civil war against a backdrop of widening regional violence and new allegations of chemical weapons use.

John Kerry and Sergey Lavrov began one-on-one discussions in Paris, a U.S. official said, with such issues as when to hold the meeting on Syria, how to bring the warring parties to the table and whether to include Iran all likely to be on the table.

U.S. officials said little about the talks in advance and they played down expectations of any announcements, suggesting the peace conference's timing and venue - widely expected to be in Geneva in mid-June - will be announced by the United Nations.

After the meeting, Kerry and Lavrov were due to dine with French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, whose nation, along with Britain, has been pushing to end an EU arms embargo that has preventing them from giving weapons to the rebels.

Syria's government has said it will attend the conference, but the Syrian opposition is still struggling to reach unity in their fractious ranks and has not yet committed to attend.

Heavy fighting raged on Monday around the strategic Syrian border town of Qusair and the capital Damascus, and there were further reports of chemical weapons attacks by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces.

Syrian government offensives in recent weeks are widely seen as an attempt to bolster Assad's negotiating position before the planned conference co-sponsored by Washington and Moscow.

Both sides in the conflict, now in its third year, have accused each other of using chemical weapons.

Ex-minor leaguer says baseball cheating lives

A former minor leaguer says cheating is alive and well in professional baseball.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Garrett Broshuis says he fooled around with a spitball a few years ago, but couldn't bring himself to use the illegal pitch in a game.

Broshuis, who recently graduated from law school, is concerned about what he calls a "culture of deception" in baseball. In his experience, the most common example of rule bending by pitchers involved pine tar. But he also recalls playing with a pitcher who had sandpaper on his glove.

Stretching the rules to get an edge is nothing new in this sport. But Broshuis' account adds to the ongoing debate over how big of a problem it is.

SAVAR, Bangladesh (AP) ? A Bangladesh court has given police 15 days to interrogate the owner of a building that collapsed last week, killing at least 384 people, as rescuers used heavy machinery to cut through the destroyed structure after giving up hopes of finding any more survivors.

Mohammed Sohel Rana, who was arrested Sunday as he tried to flee to India, will be held for questioning on charges of negligence, illegal construction and forcing workers to join work. His father, Abdul Khaleque, was also arrested on suspicion of aiding Rana to force people to work in a dangerous building.

The illegally constructed, 8-story Rana Plaza collapsed in a heap on the morning of April 24 as thousands of people worked inside in five garment factories. About 2,500 survivors have been accounted for.

Rana was brought to the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate's Court in a bullet-proof vest, and led away to an unknown detention place after the magistrate granted a police request to hold him longer before filing formal charges. The crimes he is accused of carry a maximum punishment of seven years. More charges could be added later.

The collapse was the deadliest disaster to hit Bangladesh's garment industry, which is worth $20 billion annually and supplies global retailers.

In renewed anger against conditions in garment factories ? a mainstay of Bangladesh's economy ? hundreds of workers poured into the streets in the Dhaka suburb of Ashulia and set fire to an ambulance Monday, the Independent TV network reported. They also tried to set fire to a factory, it said. Authorities shut down all garment factories in the Ashulia and Gazipur industrial suburbs, including one that had reportedly developed cracks and was evacuated earlier.

By Tuesday morning, officials said there was a confirmed death toll of 384. Most of the bodies have been handed to their families, but 49 are in the morgue at the state-run Dhaka Medical College Hospital awaiting identification.

Rescuers are using cranes, drilling and cutting machines to remove big slabs of walls and floors of the collapsed building, and the death toll is expected to climb because the ground floor has not been reached.

No official estimate of missing has been given, but hundreds of people are still milling in the area looking for their missing loved ones.

"We are proceeding cautiously. If there is still a soul alive, we will try to rescue that person," said army spokesman Shahinul Islam.

However, Brig. Gen. Ali Ahmed Khan, chief of the fire brigade at the scene, said there was little hope of finding anyone alive. "Our men went inside and saw some dead bodies in the ground floor. But no one was seen alive," he said.

In another sign no more survivors are expected, the waiting ambulances that had rushed the rescued to hospitals since the start of the disaster are now gone.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited the site and a nearby hospital to meet with survivors on Monday.

Hasina earlier ordered the arrest of building owner Rana, a small-time political operative from her Awami League party's youth wing. He was brought back by helicopter from a border town to Dhaka.

He had permission to build a 5-story building but added three more floors illegally. He last appeared in public on Tuesday in front of the Rana Plaza after huge cracks appeared in the building.

Witnesses said Rana assured tenants then that the building was safe. Police, however, ordered an evacuation. A bank and some first-floor shops closed, but managers of the garment factories on the upper floors told workers to continue their shifts.

Hours later, the Rana Plaza was reduced to rubble, crushing most victims under massive blocks of concrete.

Police have also arrested four owners of three factories. Also in detention for questioning are two municipal engineers who were involved in approving the building's design. Local TV stations reported that the Bangladesh High Court has frozen the bank accounts of the owners of all five garment factories.

A garment manufacturers' group said the factories in the building employed 3,122 workers, but it was not clear how many were inside when it fell.

The death toll surpassed a fire five months ago that killed 112 people and brought widespread pledges to improve worker-safety standards. But since then, very little has changed in Bangladesh.

The collapse and previous disasters in garment factories have focused attention on the poor working conditions of workers who toil for as little as $38 a month to produce clothing for top international brands.

"I think it is a wakeup call for the nation, a wakeup call for the industry and for the trade unions," said Shirin Akter, founding president of Karmojibi Nari, a Dhaka-based Bangladeshi group that lobbies for the rights of women in the workplace.

Bangladesh's garment industry was the third-largest in the world in 2011, after China and Italy, having grown rapidly in the past decade.

Among the garment makers in the building were Phantom Apparels, Phantom Tac, Ether Tex, New Wave Style and New Wave Bottoms. Altogether, they produced several million shirts, pants and other garments a year.

The New Wave companies, according to their website, make clothing for several major North American and European retailers.

Britain's Primark has acknowledged it was using a factory in Rana Plaza. It said in a statement Monday that it is providing emergency aid and will pay compensation to victims who worked for its supplier.

"Primark notes the fact that its supplier shared the building with those of other retailers. We are fully aware of our responsibility. We urge these other retailers to come forward and offer assistance," it said.

Many other retailers have distanced themselves from the disaster, saying they were not involved with the factories at the time of the collapse or had not recently ordered garments from them.

Wal-Mart said none of its clothing had been authorized to be made in the facility, but it is investigating whether there was any unauthorized production.

Mississippi man makes court appearance in ricin letters case

By Robbie Ward

TUPELO, Mississippi (Reuters) - A Mississippi martial arts instructor appeared in federal court on Monday to face charges in connection with mailing letters containing the deadly poison ricin to President Barack Obama and other U.S. officials.

Everett Dutschke, 41, was arrested on Saturday in Tupelo, Mississippi, after authorities searched his former business and home. He is charged with developing and possessing ricin and attempting to use it as a weapon.

Wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, Dutschke responded briefly to a judge's questions at the hearing in Oxford, Mississippi, on whether he understood the charges against him. The judge ordered a preliminary hearing be held on Thursday when prosecutors will present more detailed evidence in the case.

An indictment detailing the charges is under seal but could be made public later on Monday, said George Lucas, Dutschke's court appointed attorney.

Dutschke has denied having any involvement with the ricin letters and said he cooperated with federal officials during their searches.

He faces a possible life sentence if convicted.

Dutschke's arrest came nearly two weeks after suspicious letters intended for Obama and U.S. Senator Roger Wicker of Mississippi were intercepted in Washington. Tests showed they were tainted with ricin, a highly lethal poison made from castor beans. A separate ricin-lased letter was also sent to a Mississippi judge.

Authorities initially arrested another Mississippi man, Kevin Curtis, in the case but dropped the charges last week after a search of his house failed to turn up any evidence of his involvement.

Dutschke's name surfaced at a court hearing when Curtis' attorney suggested someone framed her client and mentioned a running feud between the two men.

He also faces charges in a separate case related to an April 1 indictment for fondling three children between ages 7 and 16, from 2007 to 2013, according to court records.

The ricin-tainted letters were discovered just days after the bombings of the Boston Marathon and during the massive police manhunt for those responsible, helping to fuel anxiety in the United States, especially in the capital.

The case rekindled memories of the 2001 U.S. anthrax attacks that killed five people and puzzled investigators for years. The Justice Department later said that a U.S. scientist who committed suicide was responsible.

Finally, Phone RAM as Good as the Stuff in Your Computer

Samsung has just announced that it's rolling some pretty exciting new memory into production, which will finally bring computer-like RAM performance to your mobile.

Of course, to work that out you have to sift through all the mention of 20nm manufacturing techniques and LPDDR3 naming. What you really need to know is that it's fast: it can transmit data at up to 2,133 Mbps per pin. That's twice as fast as the previous mobile memory standard, and means it's possible to transmit three full HD videos?17GB!?in one second over the new Samsung chip when it's embedded in a phone.

It's efficient, too, with the shrinking of the chip's geometry apparently providing a 20 percent increase in efficiency. All that, and it's possible to squeeze 2GB into a stack just 0.8mm in height. Expect to see this stuff hit the next generation of super phones within the next year?and notice a big difference, too. [Engadget]

Google Now available on iOS devices starting today

Google Now available on iOS devices starting today

When it comes to major news, we didn't expect to hear much from Google in the run-up to I/O, but clearly, the company just couldn't wait that long. Google Now, a service that Android users have enjoyed for a year, just became available on iOS devices in the form of an update to the Google Search app, confirming those leaked videos we saw a few weeks ago. It won't have integration with notifications or alerts at launch -- it may come in a future update, but the company wasn't willing to divulge its future plans -- so you'll need to enter the app and swipe up to refresh your list of cards. The iOS version won't have every type of card that you'll find on Android, either: boarding passes, activity summary, events, concerts, Fandango and Zillow aren't included this go-round. Improvements and additional features will likely trickle in over time, but it's certainly better than nothing for iOS fans who've looked at Jelly Bean users with a slightly jealous eye. We've included Google's blog post in its entirety below, and you can jump to the source to download the app.

Egypt court turns down Mubarak's release request

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's state news agency says a court has turned down deposed President Hosni Mubarak's request to be released from prison during an investigation into corruption charges.

The news agency MENA says the Cairo Criminal Court on Sunday ordered Mubarak to remain in jail for 15 days while the charges are probed.

Mubarak can appeal the court's decision.

The longtime autocrat was ousted during a 2011 public uprising. He has spent more than two years in detention without a final verdict in the case alleging that he is responsible for the deaths of nearly 900 protesters during the uprising.

He also has been ordered held in prison on other charges, including corruption.

Mother of bomb suspects found deeper spirituality

BOSTON (AP) ? In photos of her as a younger woman, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva wears a low-cut blouse and has her hair teased like a 1980s rock star. After she arrived in the U.S. from Russia in 2002, she went to beauty school and did facials at a suburban day spa.

But in recent years, people noticed a change. She began wearing a hijab and cited conspiracy theories about 9/11 being a plot against Muslims.

Now known as the angry and grieving mother of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects, Tsarnaeva is drawing increased attention after federal officials say Russian authorities intercepted her phone calls, including one in which she vaguely discussed jihad with her elder son. In another, she was recorded talking to someone in southern Russia who is under FBI investigation in an unrelated case, U.S. officials said.

Tsarnaeva insists there is no mystery. She's no terrorist, just someone who found a deeper spirituality. She insists her sons ? Tamerlan, who was killed in a gunfight with police, and Dzhokhar, who was wounded and captured ? are innocent.

"It's all lies and hypocrisy," she told The Associated Press in Dagestan. "I'm sick and tired of all this nonsense that they make up about me and my children. People know me as a regular person, and I've never been mixed up in any criminal intentions, especially any linked to terrorism."

Amid the scrutiny, Tsarnaeva and her ex-husband, Anzor Tsarnaev, say they have put off the idea of any trip to the U.S. to reclaim their elder son's body or try to visit Dzhokhar in jail. Tsarnaev told the AP on Sunday he was too ill to travel to the U.S. Tsarnaeva faces a 2012 shoplifting charge in a Boston suburb, though it was unclear whether that was a deterrent.

At a news conference in Dagestan with Anzor last week, Tsarnaeva appeared overwhelmed with grief one moment, defiant the next. "They already are talking about that we are terrorists, I am terrorist," she said. "They already want me, him and all of us to look (like) terrorists."

Tsarnaeva arrived in the U.S. in 2002, settling in a working-class section of Cambridge, Mass. With four children, Anzor and Zubeidat qualified for food stamps and were on and off public assistance benefits for years. The large family squeezed itself into a third-floor apartment.

Zubeidat took classes at the Catherine Hinds Institute of Esthetics, before becoming a state-licensed aesthetician. Anzor, who had studied law, fixed cars.

By some accounts, the family was tolerant.

Bethany Smith, a New Yorker who befriended Zubeidat's two daughters, said in an interview with Newsday that when she stayed with the family for a month in 2008 while she looked at colleges, she was welcomed even though she was Christian and had tattoos.

"I had nothing but love over there. They accepted me for who I was," Smith told the newspaper. "Their mother, Zubeidat, she considered me to be a part of the family. She called me her third daughter."

Zubeidat said she and Tamerlan began to turn more deeply into their Muslim faith about five years ago after being influenced by a family friend, named "Misha." The man, whose full name she didn't reveal, impressed her with a religious devotion that was far greater than her own, even though he was an ethnic Armenian who converted to Islam.

"I wasn't praying until he prayed in our house, so I just got really ashamed that I am not praying, being a Muslim, being born Muslim. I am not praying. Misha, who converted, was praying," she said.

By then, she had left her job at the day spa and was giving facials in her apartment. One client, Alyssa Kilzer, noticed the change when Tsarnaeva put on a head scarf before leaving the apartment.

"She had never worn a hijab while working at the spa previously, or inside the house, and I was really surprised," Kilzer wrote in a post on her blog. "She started to refuse to see boys that had gone through puberty, as she had consulted a religious figure and he had told her it was sacrilegious. She was often fasting."

Kilzer wrote that Tsarnaeva was a loving and supportive mother, and she felt sympathy for her plight after the April 15 bombings. But she stopped visiting the family's home for spa treatments in late 2011 or early 2012 when, during one session, she "started quoting a conspiracy theory, telling me that she thought 9/11 was purposefully created by the American government to make America hate Muslims."

"It's real," Tsarnaeva said, according to Kilzer. "My son knows all about it. You can read on the Internet."

In the spring of 2010, Zubeidat's eldest son got married in a ceremony at a Boston mosque that no one in the family had previously attended. Tamerlan and his wife, Katherine Russell, a Rhode Island native and convert from Christianity, now have a child who is about 3 years old.

Zubeidat married into a Chechen family but was an outsider. She is an Avar, from one of the dozens of ethnic groups in Dagestan. Her native village is now a hotbed of an ultraconservative strain of Islam known as Salafism or Wahabbism.

It is unclear whether religious differences fueled tension in their family. Anzor and Zubeidat divorced in 2011.

About the same time, there was a brief FBI investigation into Tamerlan Tsarnaev, prompted by a tip from Russia's security service.

The vague warning from the Russians was that Tamerlan, an amateur boxer in the U.S., was a follower of radical Islam who had changed drastically since 2010. That led the FBI to interview Tamerlan at the family's home in Cambridge. Officials ultimately placed his name, and his mother's name, on various watch lists, but the inquiry was closed in late spring of 2011.

After the bombings, Russian authorities told U.S. investigators they had secretly recorded a phone conversation in which Zubeidat had vaguely discussed jihad with Tamerlan. The Russians also recorded Zubeidat talking to someone in southern Russia who is under FBI investigation in an unrelated case, according to U.S. officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the investigation with reporters.

The conversations are significant because, had they been revealed earlier, they might have been enough evidence for the FBI to initiate a more thorough investigation of the Tsarnaev family.

Anzor's brother, Ruslan Tsarni, told the AP from his home in Maryland that he believed his former sister-in-law had a "big-time influence" on her older son's growing embrace of his Muslim faith and decision to quit boxing and school.

While Tamerlan was living in Russia for six months in 2012, Zubeidat, who had remained in the U.S., was arrested at a shopping mall in the suburb of Natick, Mass., and accused of trying to shoplift $1,624 worth of women's clothing from a department store.

She failed to appear in court to answer the charges that fall, and instead left the country.

Alan Wood dies, leaves legacy of Iwo Jima flag

Alan Wood dies: The US Navy veteran brought a flag from Pearl Harbor to the Battle of Iwo Jima. Alan Wood later served as the Jet Propulsion Lab spokesman.

It wasn't until years later, Wood began to share that it was he who provided the American flag raised by US marines on the peak of? Mount Suribachi in 1945.

Wood passed on April 18 in Sierra Madre, Calif. After the war, Wood worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Ca?ada Flintridge, first as a technical artist and later as a spokesman.

Wood had recovered the famous Iwo Jima flag from a salvage depot at Pearl Harbor, and brought it aboard the Navy vessel LST-779, where he was a communications officer, according to the Pasadena Star News. His ship was among some 450 that had amassed for the 1945 US assault on the key Pacific island.

"I was on the ship when a young Marine came along," he explained in the newsletter. "He was dusty, dirty and battle-worn, and even though he couldn't have been more than 18 or 19, he looked like an old man.

" 'Do you have a flag?' he asked me. 'Yes,' I said, 'What for?' He said something like, 'Don't worry, you won't regret it.' "

The US military decided they need to take the Pacific island of Iwo Jima. It was to be a critical refueling stop for US aircraft in the assault on Okinawa, Japan. But the Japanese had some 20,000 soldiers dug in ?? literally in tunnels crisscrossing the island.

While the battle for Iwo Jima took 36 days to complete, after just four days, a group of US Marines was sent to the 556-foot summit to plant a US flag. According to the US Navy Department Library, some 40 men from 3rd Platoon, E Company, 2nd Battalion, 28th Marines, led by 1st Lieutenant Harold G. Schrier, raised the flag on Feb. 23, 1945.

"At 10:20 a.m., the flag was hoisted on a steel pipe above the island. This symbol of victory sent a wave of strength to the battle-weary fighting men below, and struck a further mental blow against the island's defenders," according to the official Navy history.

Three hours later, a second patrol was ordered to replace the flag with a bigger one. Some reports say it was to make the flag more visible, others say that an officer wanted the first flag as a souvenir.

That's where Alan Wood's flag was raised. And this was the now famous flag raising which was captured on film by Associated Press photographer,? Joe Rosenthal. His iconic photo earned him the 1945 Pulitzer Prize, and that image later became the basis for a monument in Washington D.C., near Arlington National Cemetery.

The two flags are now on display at the National Museum of the Marine Corps? in Triangle, Va.

Celts top Knicks 97-90 in OT, avoid playoff sweep

BOSTON (AP) ? Jason Terry scored Boston's last nine points and the Celtics weathered a strong comeback by the New York Knicks, avoiding a sweep with a 97-90 overtime win on Sunday.

Paul Pierce led the Celtics with 29 points as they forced a fifth game in the series, but it was Terry who provided the finishing touches.

In Game 3, he had been elbowed by J.R. Smith, and the NBA suspended the Knicks guard for Sunday's game.

New York had tied the game 84-84 after trailing by 20 points early in the third quarter. It was 88-all before the Celtics regained control and took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Terry. Carmelo Anthony, who led the Knicks with 36 points, hit a short jumper, but Terry connected on a 15-footer with 50 seconds remaining for a 93-90 lead.

After Anthony missed a 3-pointer with 21 seconds to go, Terry was fouled and sank both free throws. He added a layup to close out the game.

But the Celtics still have a huge deficit in trying to become the first team to win after trailing a series 3-0.

Game 5 is Wednesday night in New York, where the Knicks can win their first playoff series in 13 years.

Jeff Green scored 26 points for the Celtics and Terry finished with 18.

The Celtics showed renewed energy early after being held below 80 points in each of the first three games. They led 54-35 at halftime and 59-39 three minutes into the third quarter before their recent second-half woes returned. In previous first halves, they scored just 25 points in Game 1 and 23 in Game 2. On Sunday, they were outscored 30-14 in the third quarter and led just 68-65 heading into the fourth.

Boston held a 65-51 lead when Anthony went to the bench with 3:35 remaining. The Knicks outscored the Celtics 14-3 the rest of the way behind 11 points from Felton and a 3-pointer from Iman Shumpert. Felton finished with 16 points in the quarter and 27 in the game.

The Knicks played the first half as if they had taken shooting lessons from the Celtics. New York hit just 28.9 percent of its shots (11 for 38) after Boston made only 39.5 percent of its attempts in the first three games.

The Celtics found their range from the start and connected on 51.3 percent (20 for 39).

Notes: The Knicks were 19-2 in their previous 21 games. The Celtics were 5-14 in their previous 19. ... For the Celtics, Garnett, Green and Brandon Bass each had four fouls five minutes into the third quarter. Bass committed his fifth with 5:10 left in the period and fouled out with 4:27 to go in the games. ... Anthony committed his fourth with 4:08 remaining in the third.
