Human body could power smartphones, pacemakers and other devices

People may soon use their own bodies to power devices like smartphones. (Reuters)Imagine a world with no wall chargers. People power might just make that world a reality.

That's because our own bodies just might be the sustainable energy sources of the near future, generating electricity from our own body heat, physical movement and vibrations.

Roger Highfield of the Science Museum Group writes that scientists are already at work on a number of such devices, with the first wave of human-powered generators hitting the market in the next two years.

The applications would range from personal health to entertainment. For example, pacemaker batteries must be replaced every few years. But a pacemaker running off a piezoelectric current could provide a permanent energy source, reducing the need for risky and expensive operations.

The word piezoelectricity means to generate energy from pressure and can be derived from a number of sources, including ceramics, crystals and even biological material, such as DNA and bone.

Researchers have spent years attempting to derive energy from nontraditional sources. For example, the East Japan Railway Company has experimented with using train gates to generate electricity as commuters pass through them.

And researchers at MIT have been working on creating a "crowd farm" that would generate electricity from human movement in public spaces.

University of Wisconsin-Madison associate professor Tom Krupenkin told Highfield that placing a salty liquid within the soles of shoes could generate enough electricity to power many of the devices used by millions of consumers around the world.

"This is more than sufficient to power such common devices as smartphones and tablets," he said. "We expect the first product prototype to be available in one to two years."

However, don't start planning to charge your Kindle with an after-dinner walk around the block just yet. Laurie Winkless of the U.K.'s National Physical Laboratory says that piezoelectric devices could prove to be more trouble than they are worth, unless used properly. For example, "thermoelectric" clothing may be able to draw energy from the body but could leave the wearer feeling uncomfortably cold. And those saltwater shoe batteries may prove to be painful for people walking long-distances.

Still, even skeptics like Winkless see a promising future around the corner for these alternative energy generators.

"Energy harvesting pots could mean that boiling your pasta charges your mobile phone," she said. "The vibrations of your washing machine could power wireless sensors?or your TV remote could be powered just by you pressing the buttons."

Rdio rolls out 2.0 update with a new look and new features

Rdio 2.0

After having done its rounds in some beta testing, Rdio v2.0 has been deemed ready for the masses and is now available for download in the Google Play Store. We're used to seeing frequent updates to Rdio but this release is a whole lot more than simple bug fixes. Aside from a whole new user interface, Rdio has added a few other welcomed additions:

  • New side-bar navigation — A new navigation panel pops open on the left side of the app to bring you to Your Music, Settings, Playlists, and other features.
  • Remote control — The app will notify you if “Rdio is playing elsewhere.” Pause, skip, or play a station from wherever you are, or click “Play Here Instead” and your mobile device will pick up right where your laptop left off.
  • Infinite scroll — You’ll never run out of new music to explore. Rdio loads more content as you scroll through Heavy Rotation, Top Charts, and New Releases.

Overall, the additions and improvements are nice though in my time with it, I did find it a little bit laggy -- maybe it just needs some to settle in. If you're an Rdio user, go ahead and grab the update and let us know in the comments how it's working for you.

Personal Bankruptcy Tips You Must Not Ignore | Siben & Siben Long ...

TIP! If you are intending to file for bankruptcy, remember that you must not transfer money or other assets to another person within the year preceding year filing. This may be construed as an attempt to conceal your assets.

Filing for bankruptcy can be relieving and stressful, all at once. It is not fun when you have to bear all your finances out in the open and everyone picks apart your financial situation. However, when your bankruptcy is over, you can re-establish your finances and no longer need to tolerate bill collectors. Read on for advice on easing the pain of bankruptcy.

TIP! Visit web sites and read information to learn as much as possible about the topic of personal bankruptcy. The U.

If you are truly faced with bankruptcy, avoid blowing your savings or retirement money, trying to pay off debts. Retirement accounts should never be accessed unless all other options have been exhausted. Using your savings is necessary, but decimating it and leaving yourself dangling with no future financial security is not a good idea.

TIP! When a bankruptcy is imminent, retain a lawyer immediately. Personal bankruptcies are detailed and complex processes, and you may miss something that costs you money.

Once you have met with an attorney, you may be given a telephone number for your creditors to confirm you are filing bankruptcy. When a debt collector calls the number, they will be able to obtain verification that your personal debt is in the process of bankruptcy filing. That should make them stop calling you.

TIP! Learn about the personal bankruptcy rules before petitioning. The bankruptcy laws are complex, and things could go badly if even one thing is out of place.

A great tip to avoid filing for bankruptcy is to make sure all your bills are paid on time and if you can, pay over the minimum amount due. Many people pay the least amount possible since it feels the most comfortable, but it can make them go into debt quicker.

TIP! One critical element for anyone filing a petition for bankruptcy is to be honest in everything you do. It is vital that you disclose all information about your assets and income so there are no delays or penalties, such as a court barring you from filing again later in the future.

Don?t just let your lawyer do everything. Your lawyer is the one who knows about the bankruptcy laws, but it is in your best interest to find out as much about the proceedings as you can. You may be tempted to hand over the reins to your attorney, but keep in mind that your future is actually at stake.

TIP! Check around to find a bankruptcy attorney with a good reputation. Find out if the attorney you are interested in offers a free consultation.

Think about getting a second job. Rather than going the bankruptcy route, discuss the situation with your debtors and explain to them everything you are doing to increase your income. Most will accede to your wishes and prevent the filing of bankruptcy.

TIP! If you?re concerned about the details of keeping your car, try to ask your attorney about details regarding lowering your monthly payments. Filing for Chapter 7 can help to lower your monthly payments on possessions such as your vehicle, helping to ease your financial load.

A free consultation is standard for bankruptcy attorneys, so shop around before settling on one. Make sure that you meet with an actual lawyer and not an assistant or paralegal, as these people are not allowed to provide legal advice. Look for an attorney until you find one you feel comfortable with.

TIP! Be brutally honest when you file for bankruptcy, as hiding assets or liabilities, will only come back to haunt you. The person you choose to file with needs to know both the good and bad aspects of your finances.

When your bankruptcy is over, think carefully about the type of debt you are going to be involved with. There are lenders out there who will try to tempt you with high interest loans and credit cards which are directed towards people who have gone through the bankruptcy process. You will be shocked at the interest rates being offered. If you are not careful, you could end up in the same spot that had you filing for bankruptcy.

TIP! Do not file for bankruptcy unless you are sure this is the only option possible. Some creditors will settle for lesser amounts on debt, or help you work out a more affordable payment plan.

If you are moving forward with a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, you need to learn how that can negatively affect anyone who shares loans with you. Once you complete a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, you will be free of any responsibility of debt, which could put all responsibility on someone close to you. Any co-debtor may well be held responsible for paying off the total remaining amount of the debt, though.

TIP! Determine the type of bankruptcy that is best for you and your situation. There are a number of different types of bankruptcy.

There are many different reasons why people choose to file for bankruptcy. No matter why you are filing, you must remember that knowledge is the key to help during the process. The suggestions you are about to see, will make your bankruptcy easier. Use the above tips to see positive results when filing for bankruptcy.

Use Leftover Cranberry Sauce for Cocktails

Use Leftover Cranberry Sauce for CocktailsUse Leftover Cranberry Sauce for Cocktails If you still have some Thanksgiving leftovers lurking about your fridge, it's time to get creative and use them up. If cranberry sauce is among those leftovers, the folks at CHOW have a creative use for it: use it in a tasty cocktail you can sip while you figure out what to do with the rest of the leftovers.

The video above walks you through the recipe. It's pretty straight forward, and while the cranberry sauce CHOW uses is clearly of the canned, gelatinous variety, we imagine you can do the same with any cranberry sauce, even homemade, as long as it's smooth enough to mix easily. If it's chunky leftover cranberry sauce you're trying to get rid up, a quick hit with an immersion blender (or even a regular blender) should smooth it out enough to give this a whirl.

Five reasons America won't fall off the 'fiscal cliff'

The political and economic ramifications are too big for Washington to let the large tax increases and spending cuts take effect. But this doesn't necessarily mean lawmakers will craft a decisive solution to the nation's fiscal woes.

By David Grant,?Staff writer / November 25, 2012

This is the cover story from the Nov. 26 edition of The Christian Science MonitorWeekly.

Relax, America. You can put your parachutes away. Washington isn't likely to take the country over the dreaded "fiscal cliff." Even a capital city as deadlocked and dysfunctional as Washington has been in recent years is not likely to risk a move that has so many economic and political ramifications, according to a wide range of experts.

That is not to say the journey won't be contentious and perhaps a cliffhanger. Don't forget, the same cast of characters is starring in this big-screen epic ? either a dark comedy or a thriller, take your pick ? that has brought Americans to this point before: Democrats ruling the White House and Senate, and Republicans, including a clique of unyielding conservatives, in power in the House.

Yet analysts on both sides of the aisle believe that doing nothing, which on Jan. 1 would trigger the beginning of $600 billion in tax increases and large cuts to the federal budget, would inflict too much damage on individuals' wallets, on the economy, and on America's standing in the world.

The fiscal cliff, after all, was never intended to be a serious option. The elements of it grew out of years of debt avoidance and budget gimmickry that finally peaked in 2011 with the impasse over raising the federal debt ceiling. After a bipartisan congressional panel failed to agree on spending cuts, Republicans and Democrats added the infamous "sequestration" portion ? a series of automatic spending cuts that were so distasteful that lawmakers would be forced to agree on more sensible trims.

While an agreement to avoid the cliff could still prove elusive, many veteran Washington-watchers believe a compromise will be worked out to avoid plunging into the abyss on New Year's Eve.

"America's reputation and its economic stability are threatened dramatically by inaction," says Dan Glickman, a senior fellow at the Bipartisan Policy Center who previously served as President Clinton's secretary of Agriculture. "Except for a few zealots, most people aren't going to want to see that happen."

Some even believe that the looming fiscal cliff will eventually lead to a grand bargain between the White House and Capitol Hill on reforming America's tax code and entitlement programs ? setting the tone, perhaps, for other agreements over the next few years on issues from immigration to energy. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Here are five reasons America won't ? or let's say shouldn't ? plunge off the fiscal cliff on Jan. 1.

Because of the "R" word.

Many believe the specter of a double-dip recession remains the most important reason that Congress and the president will reach some sort of accommodation by Jan. 1. It's something that neither party wants to see ? or be blamed for.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates that with the massive spending cuts and tax increases imposed by the cliff, US gross domestic product would shrink by a half percentage point in 2013. (Some private sector forecasters believe the hit could be even more severe.) That amounts to 2.7 million fewer jobs than the economy would otherwise create by year's end, the CBO says, which would push the unemployment rate, now at 7.9 percent, above 9 percent.

Home And Garden: Home Improvement Ideas - keecen's ...

Here are 5 great improvement
ideas that can help you decide:

1. Kitchen

The kitchen is perhaps probably the most unforgettable places in the home, and also the one that most visitors reach notice the most. Instead of spending lots of money having all the cabinets and drawers removes and clearing up the surfaces where these were once located, you can just select a modern design, shade paint color or replace cabinet handles with increased modern designs. You may still have a similar cabinets in the kitchen but they?ll surely look new once you?ve completed the necessary beautifications.

You can also change the kitchen lights which are currently installed and change to some more modern or whatever theme you?re having for the kitchen. Additionally, change in kitchen utensils also may help make the feel of the entire kitchen completely new.

2. Lights

Lighting is one important element that beautifies the whole house. When your house lighting isn't so good, your house is not so nice. The kind of lighting you choose for your house can have a great impact on the over-all appearance and the feel of your house. You can change the lighting to give a brand new touch and feel towards the house as one of your house improvement choices.

3. Landscape

You are able to similarly improve your home by fashioning landscapes in your backyard or front yard; this will not only result in the house more attractive but it likewise provides a new fresh feel towards the entire outdoor area.

4. Windows

Rather than replacing the entire window frame that may cost you more money, try experimenting on good bits of curtains that will enhance the appearance of the home. Curtains can do wonders in beautifying a house, plus it can dictate the atmosphere of the entire place. Colourful and printed pieces can also add life and liveliness in your home while abstract designs provide a more artistic touch. You are able to pattern the design and colour of your curtain pieces based on the kind of effect you want to achieve.

5. Floor

You don?t necessarily have to change the entire flooring to improve the feel of the house; you can simply add pieces that may improve the effect of the flooring for example carpets. Carpets with bold prints turns into a decorative piece of art; not only will it boost the appearance of the flooring, it can also add attitude towards the entire place. If your flooring looks a bit dirty no matter how many times you perform the mopping, you can also consult a flooring expert on suggestions of floor cleaning equipment that may change that old floor right into a shiny almost-brand-new-looking one.

Members of the Kenyan parliament have today reached Garissa town to launch very sensitive probe up on criminal and inhumanity activities by the Kenyan Defense Forces [KDF] during an operation in the Garissa town this week.

The members of the parliament including the defense committee and the foreign affairs committee were sent to Garissa to launch a full and investigation on all criminal activities committed by the KDF on Monday after killing of three soldiers by unknown assailants in Garissa town.

At least 45 Garissa residents were tortured, eight women raped, more than twenty shops and food stores looted as the whole Suuqa Mugdi market, which is the largest in Garissa was burnt down by the KDF during in Monday operation , officials and eye witnesses confirmed.

?We are here to meet with the different segments of the society here in Garissa,.. first we have to meet with the district officials and then we will visit the hospital where most of the victims were brought? MP Aden Barre who is Garissa said today.

?We are gathering all useful information on this case because what happened here on Monday and on Tuesday was totally unjustifiable.? the MP said. ?It was another Wagala carnage committed by the KDF and we are not sitting to see a third one will happen?.

Meanwhile the Kenyan prime minister Raila Odinga has paid his first visit to the embattled town of Garissa where most of the victims of the KDF?s acts were still demanding full justice to be done.

?The government should compensate for the lose of Garissa traders whom their shops were burned and looted and their girls were raped.? said Farah Mo?alim, the deputy speaker of the Kenyan parliament who is also in Garissa town.

Amina Hassan who lost her shop in Suuq Mudgi and was herself tortured on Monday has called for the impeachment of the Kenyan military officials as a result of the crimes committed by the forces.

?I was here in my shop on Monday when two KDF officers came and begun beating me on the head and the back until I was near to faint. Then they looted my money? they have stolen KSh.400 from my shop? Amina said.

?While I remember how they acted that day [Monday] I feel as I am not a Kenyan citizen even that I was born here and lived for more than 45 years? she added.

Jack Taylor scores 138 points for Grinnell

Jack Taylor's performance left even Kobe Bryant impressed.

The Division III guard shattered the NCAA scoring record with 138 points, hoisting a mind-boggling 108 attempts ? or one shot every 20 seconds ? in eclipsing the previous record by 25 points.

Taylor made 27 of 71 3-point attempts, was 52 of 108 overall from the field and added seven free throws on 10 attempts while playing 36 minutes in Grinnell's 179-104 victory over Faith Baptist Bible on Tuesday night in Grinnell, Iowa.

"That's crazy, man. I don't care what level you're at. Scoring 138 points is pretty insane," the Lakers' superstar said after Los Angeles' victory over the Nets.

Even Taylor was having a hard time processing his feat.

"I don't think reality has set in yet," said the 5-foot-10, 170-pound sophomore from Black River Falls, Wis.

That's partly because Taylor was coming off a poor shooting weekend and started Tuesday's night game off slow ? at least according to his standards. His coaches figured the best way to get him on track was for him to keep chucking, so that's what Taylor did.

"Maybe my cold shooting from the weekend was affecting me," Taylor said. "But then they started to drop."

Taylor had 58 points at halftime.

Then he got hot.

Taylor was 32 of 58 from the field ? including 18 3s ? in the final 20 minutes and averaged an astonishing four points a minute in the second half.

"It felt like anything I tossed up was going in," Taylor said.

Bryant, who has a shoe that bears his Black Mamba nickname, has a theory.

"He must have been wearing the Mambas, man. Only Mambas have no conscience to shoot the ball that much," said Bryant, who has an 81-point game, second-best in NBA history, on his resume.

Rio Grande's Bevo Francis held the NCAA scoring record with 113 points against Hillsdale in 1954. In 1953, Francis had 116 against Ashland Junior College. Frank Selvy is the only other player to reach triple figures, scoring 100 points for Division I Furman against Newberry in 1954. The previous Grinnell record was 89 by Griffin Lentsch last Nov. 19 against Principia.

Taylor recently transferred to Grinnell, located about 50 miles east of Des Moines, after playing one season for Wisconsin-La Crosse. Under coach David Arseneault, the Pioneers press and shoot 3s like nobody else in the country at any level. They've led the nation in scoring for 17 of the past 19 seasons while ranking first nationally in 3-point shooting for the 15 of those past 19 years.

Taylor's game was so astounding it overshadowed the 70 points Faith Baptist's David Larson had on 34-of-44 shooting.

Carmelo Anthony and the New York Knicks were amazed by Taylor's accomplishment when they heard about it after their victory in New Orleans.

"I never heard of nothing like that. That's like a video game," Anthony said, an incredulous look on his face. "How can you shoot 100 times, though?"

He joked that from now on when someone asks if he's taking too many shots, he'll mention "that someone shot it 108 times."

Raymond Felton also was astounded by the 108 shots.

"His elbow has got to be sore," Felton said.

Deployment of Patriots to Turkey could take weeks

BRUSSELS (AP) ? Even if NATO quickly approves Turkey's request for the deployment of Patriot missiles on its border with Syria, winning parliamentary approval, selecting sites for the air defense batteries, and transporting them there mean they probably wouldn't be operational for weeks.

Germany, the Netherlands and the U.S. have the advanced PAC-3 model Patriots that Turkey wants to intercept ballistic missiles, but if they come from the two European countries, their parliaments may have to vote on that first.

NATO said Wednesday it will consider Turkey's request "without delay," and next week a NATO team will visit the alliance member for a site survey to consider a deployment. Officials say the Patriots would probably be sent by sea.

Syria's civil war has left Turkey the target of artillery and mortar fire.

Artificial Intelligence and IP Law

Call for papers:
AIIP ? First International workshop on Artificial Intelligence and IP law
(Full details at http://www.create.ac.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/AIIP-cfp.pdf)

AIIP, the first international workshop on AI and IP, will be held in conjunction with the JURIX conference on AI and Law on the 17.12.2012 in Amsterdam.

Important dates:
Deadline for abstracts: Friday the 23.11.2012
Notification of acceptance: Thursday 29.11.2012

Abstracts of no more than 1000 words should be send to the workshop
organiser, Burkhard Schafer, B.schafer@ed.ac.uk
Publication possibilities of full papers will be discussed at the
workshop, contacts have been made to several journals,
including Script-ed (www.script-ed.org).

The digital economy is a technology mediated economy. Computer programs
create, store, replicate and distribute its main commodity, digital
objects of various kinds. Copyright law has taken on particular
significance in this economy, protecting the investment of companies and
creators, incentivising innovation and creativity, and ultimately
becoming the central element that regulates the relation between the
stakeholders in this economy. Ever since Larry Lessig?s proposal to
understand ?Digital Rights Management? as a form of regulation through
code, the field of copyright in the digital economy has opened up a new
field of research questions for Artificial Intelligence and Law. How can
we represent in more intelligent and semantically richer ways legal
concepts that ensure that all, and only, lawful use can be made of
digital objects such as film clips or music tunes? How can Information
Retrieval support e-discovery in IP litigation? How can we support
through technology creators and digital businesses to manage their IP
rights, or to use third party material in a law-compliant way? These are
just a few of the questions that offer new and exciting applications for
artificial intelligence in a legal context.
Despite this obvious opportunity for AI and Law research to contribute
to the open problem of the adequate regulation of the digital economy,
papers with a focus on IP law have been the exception in the AI and law
community. The first workshop an AI and IP aims to address this issue,
by inviting researchers with background in law or AI to exchange ideas,
develop new research programmes and ultimately to form a new community
of experts. For the first workshop, we invite papers on topics such as

- ?intelligent? DRM systems and copyright regulation through computer code.
- formal models of copyright law and legislation.
- e-discovery for IP litigation.
- decision support systems for IP law.
- intelligent compliance support systems for copyright protected assets.
- intelligent software supported mediation support for IP disputes
