Samsung ML-2955ND

Clearly aimed at a micro, small, or home office, or as a personal printer in any size office, the Samsung ML-2955ND ($130 street) is small enough to fit on a desk comfortably, yet offers an appropriate paper capacity and speed to serve as either a personal or shared printer. It doesn't hurt at all that the price is low enough to make it highly affordable as well.

The ML-2955ND has a lot in common with the slightly more expensive Brother HL-2270DW ($150 street, 4 stars), starting with a similar size. Both are smaller than many inkjets. The ML-2955ND measures 7.7 by 13.7 by 13.3 inches (HWD). That makes it taller than the Brother printer by a little less than an inch, but it also gives it a slightly smaller footprint.

Shared features include wired network support, along with a USB connection, and essentially identical paper handling. The network support makes the printers easy to share. The paper handing is appropriate for either a micro office or personal use, with a 250-sheet tray, 1-sheet manual feed, and built-in duplexer for printing on two sides of the page. Neither printer offers additional paper handling options.

One feature the HL-2270DW offers that the ML-2955ND doesn't is wireless network support. If you need WiFi, however, you can get the Samsung ML-2955DW ($150 street), which Samsung says is identical to the ND version except for the added WiFi.

Setup and Speed
For my tests, I set up the ML-2955ND on a network using a wired connection and installed the driver on a system running Windows Vista. Setup was standard fare. On our business applications suite, I timed the printer (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing) at an effective 8.5 pages per minute (ppm), a speed that's best described as acceptable but unimpressive.

Samsung ML-2955ND

The printer is certainly slower than I'd expect for the 29 ppm rating, which is roughly the speed you should see for printing text documents without graphics or photos. The HL-2270DW, for example, is rated at 27 ppm, but came in or our tests at 11.7 ppm. Under the category of being faster than expected, the HP LaserJet Pro P1102w ($149 direct, 3.5 stars), which is rated at only 18 ppm, managed 11.4 ppm on our tests.

Output Quality and Other Issues
Output quality is just a touch below par overall, with text that's a small step below par, absolutely par graphics, and photos at the low end of the very tight range where most mono lasers fall. The good news is that even with slightly below par text quality for a mono laser, the text is easily good enough for most business use. You shouldn't have any complaints about it unless you have an unusual need for small fonts.

As with most mono lasers, graphic output was easily good enough for any internal business need. Depending on how demanding you are, you may consider it good enough for PowerPoint handouts and the like. Photo output was more than good enough to print recognizable images from photos on Web pages. Depending on how demanding you are, once again, you may or may not consider them good enough for output like client newsletters.

One other issue that demands mention is the printer's running cost. The claimed 3 cents per page isn't particularly high for this price range, but it is 0.9 cents higher than Brother claims for the HL-2270DW. With only a $20 difference in initial price, if you buy the Brother printer, you can make up the difference by printing roughly 2,200 pages over the lifetime of the printer. Anything more than that, and the Brother printer will be cheaper in the long run.

Partly making up for this potentially higher total cost is the Samsung printer's Eco mode which, with default settings, switches the printer to duplex printing and toner saver mode with one touch of a button on the control panel. However, Samsung doesn't say how much the toner saver mode actually saves.

As may seem obvious, the Samsung ML-2955ND can be a good fit as a shared printer in a micro office or as a personal printer in any size office. If you're considering it, however, you should take a look at the Brother HL-2270DW as well. Depending on how many pages you expect to print, either choice could wind up being the better buy.

8 sea lions found shot to death near Seattle

By NBC News and msnbc.com staff

SEATTLE -- At least?eight sea lions have been found shot to death in the Puget Sound region in recent weeks, wildlife officials say.

The bodies of seven sea lions were recently found on the Nisqually River, south of Tacoma,?all apparently shot, NBC station KING 5 of Seattle?reported. On Monday, a mature male California sea lion was found dead on West Seattle's Lincoln Park beach.

During a necropsy, the state Department of Fish and?Wildlife removed a bullet from the left lung?of that sea lion, according to?the animal protection group Seal Sitters, which keeps watch over baby seals left on the beach while their mothers?are foraging.

State and federal authorities are investigating, but they said they?don't know who?killed the sea lions. The penalty?could range from fees to possible jail time.

California sea lions are a protected species under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Stellar sea lions are a federally protected under the Endangered Species Act.

Almost two years ago, five sea lions were found shot to death on West Seattle beaches. In that instance, the Humane Society offered a $2,500 reward for?information leading to an arrest.

Sea lions have proved to be pests in some parts of the Puget Sound. Extensive efforts have been used to prevent them from devouring salmon schooled at the ship locks that lead from Puget Sound into Seattle's Lake Union. Authorities have tried to scare those away with firecrackers, fired rubber bullets and bean bags at them, even captured and trucked them all the way to California. Sea lions that refused to take the hint?have been killed by authorities.

A photograph taken recently and published in the Seattle Times?showed dozens of sea lions on an old barge near the north?end of the Nisqually Delta, where the seven sea lions were found?shot.?

"This is the most sea lions I have ever seen at once in south sound," Pete Topping, a state Fish and Wildlife biologist, told the Times.

Msnbc.com's Gil Aegerter contributed to this report from NBC station KING 5 of Seattle.

Golf roundup | Tiger opens season with a solid round

No momentous shots for Tiger Woods. No bogeys, either.

The 14-time major winner opened his 2012 season with a solid first round Thursday at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship in the United Arab Emirates, shooting a 2-under 70 that left him three strokes behind co-leader Rory McIlroy, his playing partner.

?Hit the ball well all day today. It was a good ball-striking round,? Woods said. ?I had a hard time reading the greens out there. The greens were pretty grainy, and I just had a hard time getting a feel for it. Toward the end, I hit some pretty good putts, but overall I got fooled a lot on my reads.?

ASSOCIATED PRESS Tiger Woods, left, and Rory McIlroy survey the 10th green Thursday during the first round of Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship in the United Arab Emirates.

McIlroy shot a 67, as did Robert Karlsson. But the best shots of the day came from Sergio Garcia (71) and Jose Manuel Lara (70) -- each had a hole-in-one on the par-3 12th hole.

Gareth Maybin, Richard Finch and Jean-Baptiste Gonnet were one shot behind the two leaders. Top-ranked Luke Donald, who played alongside Woods and McIlroy, shot a 71. Second-ranked Lee Westwood (72) and fourth-ranked Martin Kaymer (77) had poor starts and never challenged.

McIlroy, the U.S. Open champion from Northern Ireland, had three birdies on his first four holes but erratic driving led to two bogeys on the next four. He steadied himself with three birdies on his back nine, including a chip-in on No. 8 from just off the green.

Woods missed several birdie chances, including a 6-footer on his ninth, the 18th hole. He also struggled with his approach shots on a course that was playing tougher than usual with its thick rough, resulting in many 25- and 30-footers coming up short.

PGA -- Spencer Levin and Kyle Stanley knew they had to post low scores on the easier North Course at Torrey Pines to get off to a good start in the Farmers Insurance Open. It went even better than they expected.

Stanley made eagle on his final hole for a 10-under 62, his best score in two years on the PGA Tour. Levin shot 29 on the back nine and had a 62, matching his career best on tour.

They were a shot ahead of FedEx Cup champion Bill Haas, who had a double bogey on his 15th hole and still managed a 63. The top 12 on the leaderboard played the North, which played slightly more than 3 1/2 strokes easier than the South Course, which hosted the U.S. Open four years ago.

The best score from the South was Marc Turnesa at 66.

Phil Mickelson, meanwhile, went south on the South. The three-time champion and San Diego favorite thought his game was rounding into form when he came home from the Humana Challenge. Instead, he hit into 11 bunkers, missed a 3-foot birdie putt on the final hole and signed for a 77. It was his highest score at Torrey Pines since a 78 in the third round of 2005.

A year ago, the fairways were pinched in and the rough was unusually high on the North Course, helping to make up for the 604-yard difference between the two courses. Based on the scores, that?s no longer the case.

Vijay Singh, Rod Pampling, Josh Teater and PGA Tour rookie John Huh were at 64, with Huh making three eagles.

Noteworthy

SOLHEIM CUP -- Meg Mallon is the next U.S. captain for the Solheim Cup. She is a four-time major champion, including two U.S. Women?s Open titles, and she played in the Solheim Cup eight times. Her overall record was 13-9-7, including 5-2-1 in singles. She is second only to Juli Inkster in most Solheim Cup points earned by an American.

Cooling China worries some multinationals (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Slowing growth in China is emerging as a concern in some of this quarter's earnings reports from U.S. multinationals that have long relied on strong growth in China and other emerging markets to drive their profits.

Though China's economic growth is still well above that in other economies, its efforts to cool that growth -- for example, by restricting credit -- are now translating into weaker sales at some U.S. companies that do business there.

The trend is not yet widespread and companies are quick to stress the many advantages of China's market, but the commentary this earnings season has taken a more cautious tone than in the past.

3M Co's Asia-Pacific sales rose 3 percent in the latest quarter, weaker than in recent results, reflecting softer demand in China.

"The Chinese government successfully slowed activity to stem inflation," 3M Chief George Buckley said on a conference call with analysts. "Our China team anticipate continued below trend growth in the first half of 2012."

3M (MMM.N) profit beat Wall Street forecasts. The maker of Post-It notes, Scotch tape and components for consumer electronics reported net earnings of $954 million, or $1.35 per share, compared with $928 million, or $1.28 per share, a year earlier.

Analysts on average were expecting a profit of $1.31 a share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

A weak spot was the company's display and graphics segment, hurt by what 3M called "deteriorating" demand for consumer electronics. The business showed its largest sales declines in Asia Pacific.

Another global manufacturer, Eaton Corp (ETN.N), explicitly singled out China as one of several factors behind its sales miss.

Eaton Corp (ETN.N), a maker of electrical control systems and auto and truck components, reported a disappointing quarterly profit on Thursday, saying U.S. customers delayed major projects, Europe's economies hurt sales, and tight credit damped China sales of electrical equipment.

"In Asia Pacific, the shortfall was due to a slowdown in China as a result of restrictions on credit availability," Chief Executive Sandy Cutler said on Thursday.

Eaton's net income rose to $362 million, or $1.07 per share, from $280 million, or 82 cents per share, a year earlier. That was below the analysts' average estimate of $1.11 a share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Sales rose 10 percent to $4.03 billion, below Wall Street estimates of $4.16 billion.

Eaton shares were down 2.8 percent in early trading at $48.15. 3M was up 1.2 percent to $87.50.

SINGLE-DIGIT GDP GROWTH

"A lot of the growth prospects for these companies overseas have been (dependent) on what happens in China," said Catherine Avery, president and CEO of CAIM LLC, which holds Eaton shares as well as Illinois Tools Works and Emerson Electric, which have not yet reported results.

"If they do slow, it's going to be an issue," she said, adding that economic growth of 8 percent, though down from 11 percent, is still pretty good compared to the rest of the world.

China, like the United States, is affected by Europe's debt problems and slowing euro zone economies, Avery said, so until investors get clarity on how Europe resolves its issues, long-term corporate forecasts need to be taken with a grain of salt. Many companies are rightly sticking to very broad 2012 forecasts.

To be sure, any China slowdown may well be short-lasting. 3M's Chief Operating Officer, Inge Thulin, said faster growth in China would return later in the year.

"Whatever challenges (emerging markets) present today pale in comparison to the opportunities," he told analysts.

Likewise, Caterpillar Inc (CAT.N), whose earnings blew away expectations, noted China has already restarted policies to support growth, and said it expects further easing is likely. It estimated China's economy will grow 8.5 percent in 2012, "sufficient for growth in construction and increased commodity demand."

The world's largest heavy machinery maker said net income for the fourth quarter was $1.55 billion, or $2.32 per share, compared with $968 million, or $1.47 per share, a year ago. That result was 59 cents above the analysts' average estimate of $1.73 a share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Sales rose 35 percent to $17.24 billion, above Wall Street estimates of $16.05 billion.

ELEVATORS, FRIDGES, FRIED CHICKEN

Signs of a China slowdown cropped up in the results of two other multinational companies this week, and affected investor sentiment toward a third.

At United Technologies Corp (UTX.N), which reported results on Wednesday, slowing Chinese elevator orders were a factor in weaker-than-expected revenue growth.

TE Connectivity (TEL.N) reported disappointing results. The Electronic connector maker's communications and industrial solutions business reported lower sales both year-over-year and sequentially. Within that business, appliance sales fell amid weak new home construction and fewer government incentives in China, the company said.

Meanwhile option investors appear to have worries about Yum Brands Inc (YUM.N), taking out protection against a share price decline ahead of the fast-food chain's report next month.

Prospects of slowing Chinese growth and unfavorable exchange rates, the same headwinds that threaten rival McDonald's Corp (MCD.N), are worrying investors, analysts say. China is Yum's top market for revenue and profit and the company's KFC chain is the top Western restaurant brand there.

Pakistani premier tones down criticism of army (AP)

ISLAMABAD ? Pakistan's prime minister toned down his criticism of the country's powerful generals Wednesday, a sign of lessening tension between the civilian government and the army that some predicted could topple the nation's leaders.

The two sides have long been in conflict, but tempers flared in recent months over a secret memo allegedly sent by the government to Washington last year asking for help in stopping a supposed army coup after the U.S. operation to kill al-Qaida founder Osama bin Laden. The government has denied any connection to the letter.

The political crisis has come as the government is facing an array of challenges, including a struggling economy, rampant militant violence and troubled relations with its most important ally, the United States.

Denying it ever planned to carry out a coup, the army was outraged by the memo and pushed the Supreme Court to investigate, against the government's wishes. The probe prompted a war of words between Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and the army. He tried to calm that on Wednesday.

"I want to dispel the impression that the military leadership acted unconstitutionally or violated rules," Pakistani state television reported Gilani as saying. "We have to be seen as being on the same page."

His comments followed a meeting Tuesday with army chief Gen. Ashfaq Pervez Kayani and the head of the army's powerful intelligence agency, Lt. Gen. Shuja Pasha. The talk was another sign tempers had cooled.

Gilani previously criticized the army for cooperating with the Supreme Court investigation and said the standoff was nothing less than a choice between "democracy and dictatorship."

The army had warned of possible "grievous consequences" if the government did not tone down its criticism.

The conflict raised fears of a military coup, something that has happened three times since Pakistan was founded in 1947. Many analysts doubted a coup was imminent, but some speculated that the army was working with the Supreme Court to oust the government through constitutional means.

The court has clashed with the government on a separate case involving old corruption charges against President Asif Ali Zardari and even threatened to hold the prime minister in contempt over the matter.

In violence Wednesday, Gunmen on a motorcycle killed three Shiite Muslim lawyers and wounded one other in the southern city of Karachi in an apparent sectarian attack, said local police officer Naeem Shaikh. The dead included a father, son and nephew, he said.

Sunni Muslim militants have carried out scores of bombings and shootings against minority Shiites in Pakistan. In recent years, Sunni attacks on Shiites have become far more common.

The Sunni-Shiite schism over the true heir to Islam's Prophet Muhammad dates back to the seventh century.

More kids seek tans as they age, may raise skin cancer risk (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? As children go from elementary to junior high school, the desire to tan grows stronger while the habit of using sunscreen goes out the window, according to a survey -- potentially raising the risk of getting deadly skin cancer later on.

The survey, carried out over three years, found that sunscreen use fell by half, said a study published in the journal Pediatrics, a worrying trend since there is evidence that sun damage at a young age is tied to a higher risk of developing melanoma.

The number of melanoma cases in the United States has been rising for the past three decades, and around 70,230 new cases will be diagnosed this year, according to the American Cancer Society.

"I think especially at this age, and in general, there are a lot of forces that promote tanning," said Stephen Dusza, a researcher at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City and lead author of the study.

Though Dusza said he expected that children would want to tan more as they grew older, due partly to advertising and tanning among many celebrities, the results surprised him.

"I was struck by the magnitude of the reduction in the use of sunscreen -- a 50 percent drop," he said.

Dusza's group surveyed 360 fifth graders in Massachusetts about their time in the sun, how often they used sun protection and their attitudes about tanning. Three years later, the children answered the same questions.

Only one in four of the eighth graders said they used sunscreen when they were outside for more than six hours, which was half as many who said they used sunscreen in fifth grade.

Four out of 10 of the children also went outside just to get a tan when they were in eighth grade, compared to two out of 10 when they were in fifth grade.

But despite the children spending more time outside trying to get a tan as they grew older, the number who got sunburned remained the same at about 50 percent.

Dusza said he wasn't certain why sunburns didn't increase, but thought that maybe children defined a sunburn differently as they got older, or perhaps their outdoor activities changed.

The study underlined the fact that many young people aren't protecting their skin, said Sophie Balk, an attending pediatrician at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore and a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, both in New York City.

"Kids think looking tan is consistent with looking healthy, but it's the opposite. A tan is the body's response to UV exposure" and shows there's been damage to the skin, Balk told Reuters Health.

"We need more media messages, more role models, more public health campaigns. As a society we could be doing more to promote skin cancer prevention and skin protection," she added. SOURCE: http://bit.ly/xrguxt

Leprosy Advocates Angered by Aardman's The Pirates!

The Pirates! Band of Misfits?(AKA The Pirates! In an Adventure With Scientists in the UK) ? starring Hugh Grant, Salma Hayek, Jeremy Piven, and David Tennant ? has upset leprosy groups. The trailer for the animated movie about a ragtag team of pirates who meet with a young Charles Darwin and help him find his way home features a scene in which the pirate captain demands gold from a "leper boat." After, a sailor's arm literally falls off his body for comedic effect. Leprosy groups feel the scene creates a larger stigma about this disease. Animation company Aardman issued a statement following the backlash:

"After reviewing the matter, we decided to change the scene out of respect and sensitivity for those who suffer from leprosy. The last thing anyone intended was to offend anyone and it is clear to us that the right way to proceed is to honor the efforts made by organizations like ILEP to educate the public about this disease."

?

World Leprosy Day happens on January 29, while the film doesn't release until March 30. Is the animation company doing the right thing, or is this a case of political correctness run amok? We're personally more offended by that awful movie title. Watch the scene in question below where ... Arms. Will. Fall. Off.

US beats Venezuela 1-0 on Clark's late goal

Jermaine Jones, Jose Velasquez

By BOB BAUM

updated 12:49 a.m. ET Jan. 22, 2012

GLENDALE, Ariz. - Ricardo Clark had barely played in the last six months. His last appearance for his German second-division team came in July, and this was his first game for the U.S. national squad since August.

Finally given a chance, he provided the goal that had eluded his team all night.

Clark headed Jermaine Jones' corner kick into the net in the 7th minute of stoppage time and the United States beat Venezuela 1-0 in a friendly on Saturday night.

U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann inserted Clark into the game in the 86th minute.

"Ricardo came in and you could see that he was struggling because he hasn't played for many months," Klinsmann said. "He was trying hard to catch up with the group and still not there because of that long stretch. But once on the field he is a player that is technically very gifted."

The U.S. had dominated play with nothing to show for it before Clark beat goalkeeper Jose Morales from 7 yards away for his third international goal and first since September 2009.

Venezuela was livid at the finish, upset with a series of calls and non-calls by officials that led to a series of events concluding with the winning goal.

Moments after Clark scored, Venezuela's Jose Velasquez was ejected with a red card. Venezuela drew four yellow cards to one for the United States.

"For us, it was sad to give up a goal in the 98th minute," Venezuela coach Cesar Farias said. "For us, this result leaves a sour taste and the way we lost, but the experience is important."

The first match between the countries in five years featured the "B" teams of both nations because the top players are with their professional squads.

An exception was Jones, who is playing with the national team while serving an eight-game suspension by the German soccer federation.

"It was a great cross," Clark said of the corner kick that led to the goal. "I found a good spot and made the most of it."

It was Clark's first game since the United States played Mexico on Aug. 10. He last scored in international competition against Trinidad and Tobago on Sept. 9, 2009.

The 28-year-old midfielder from Jonesboro, Ga., is ignominiously remembered for a play in the 2010 World Cup, when Ghana's Kevin-Prince Boateng stripped the ball from him and put the Black Stars ahead in the fifth minute. Ghana went on to eliminate the Americans 2-1 in overtime.

Jones, who served as U.S. captain for the game, was suspended when the German federation concluded he had intentionally stepped on the foot of star player Marco Reus during a break in the action of a German Cup game between Jones' team Schalke and Borussia Moenchengladbach.

The U.S. outshot Venezuela 15-6, many of the opportunities from short range, but the shots were errant, or Morales made one of his five saves.

Even though it was a struggle, Klinsmann liked what he saw from his young players.

"We had 10, 12 chances and they had no chances, we controlled completely and that gives them confidence," he said. "We wanted to give them a feeling of this type of game that they can play with these nations."

Morales was shaken up after he took a knee to the left thigh from American C.J. Sapong. The goalkeeper sat on the ground for several minutes until the decision was made to leave him in the game, an incident that led to the extended stopping time that featured the winning goal.

The United States beat a team from South America for the first time since a 3-1 win over Ecuador on March 25, 2007. The U.S. had 10 losses and three ties against teams from that continent since then.

The U.S .improved to 3-4-1 since former German World Cup star Klinsmann took over from Bob Bradley as coach last year.

Jones had one of the best chances for a goal but missed from point-blank range. The U.S. had also failed miserably on set plays until the game winner.

Venezuela had a scoring shot in the 62nd minute but Carlos Salazar's header went right into the hands of goalkeeper Bill Hamid. Moments later, the U.S. squad missed another chance when Teal Bunbury's shot off a breakaway was just right of the post.

Venezuela and the United States played for the fourth time. The U.S. leads the series 2-0-1.

Clark's goal was only the sixth for the U.S. teams in Klinsmann's eight games as coach.

Clark, a former player with Major League Soccer's Houston Dynamo, is with Eintracht Frankfurt but has fallen out of favor and hasn't been in a match for the team since July 25, the second game of the season.

The United States plays Panama in Panama City on Wednesday.

Hamid made his U.S. national team debut along with defender A.J. DeLaGarza, midfielder Graham Zusi and substitute Sapong.

Tracy Morgan Hospitalized At Sundance Film Festival

Comedian Tracy Morgan was rushed to the hospital yesterday while attending the Sundance Film Festival in Utah. While attending the Creative Coalition Spotlight Awards, where he was to receive honors for the Spotlight Initiative Award actor Tracy Morgan fell down. Although there are reports speculating that he was inebriated the actor was taken to the hospital. Today his rep released the below statement on his condition. From a combination of exhaustion and altitude, Tracy is seeking medical attention. He is with his fianc? and grateful to the Park City Medical Center for their care. Any reports of Tracy consuming alcohol are 100 percent false. A spokesperson for the Park City Medical Center, where Tracy was taken, has revealed that there were not any drugs or alcohol in his system when he was admitted So between the statement from his rep and the hospital spokesperson it would appear that the 30 Rock star is going to be alright. I realize that using the excuse of exhaustion and altitude might seem like kind of like a lame excuse but anyone who has dealt with altitude when they are not sued it knows it can affect people in different ways. NES controller lets you stomp Koopas, save Princess Peach in capacitive fashion (video)

Is your NES controller in another castle? Maybe you're just pining for your smartphone's capacitive game controls for some reason. Regardless, here's a little piece of tech that just might put the fire in your flower: the capacitive touch NES controller. This sucker is milled from a copper board using a device called the MezzoMill, which -- besides making turtle-stomping peripherals -- also can be used to produce guitar effect pads, virtual keyboards, bicycle rim lights and all sorts of circuits that might tickle your fancy. Unfortunately, the creator isn't as well-funded as this inkjet-based control circuit project so he's trying to raise money through Kickstarter to make the mill in a large enough run to lower costs. Given how Kickstarter generated nearly $100 million in funding last year, maybe he's got a fighting chance. See the buttonless controller work its capacitive magic after the break.

(AP) ? South Carolina's Sen. Jim DeMint, a tea party leader, says the South Carolina Republican primary is "clearly a two-man race" now between Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney.

DeMint has steadfastly declined to endorse any of the GOP candidates, although he supported Romney four years ago. Asked about his persistent neutrality on "CBS This Morning," DeMint said, "I don't think there's very many people in South Carolina who are waiting for me to tell them how to vote."

He said he's focusing more on trying to win a Republican majority in the Senate.

DeMint says he thinks Gingrich handled a question about marital infidelity "as well as he could have." But he also said he didn't know what effect that might have on the outcome of Saturday's primary voting.

Federal prosecutors shut down Megaupload file-sharing site, founders charged

Details are still somewhat light at the moment, but reports are now coming out that the popular Megaupload file-sharing site has been shut down by Federal prosecutors in the US, and that the site's founders and other individuals have been charged with violating piracy laws. According to The New York Times, the indictment says that the company has cost copyright holders some $500 million in lost revenue, and that the site was at one time the 13th most popular on the internet. As the Times also notes, this news comes a day after Megaupload voluntarily blacked out its website to protest the SOPA and PIPA anti-piracy legislation now being considered by Congress.

Update: As The Verge reports, the indictment itself doesn't mince any words, calling Megaupload an "international organized criminal enterprise allegedly responsible for massive worldwide online piracy," and alleging that Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom generated more than $175 million in "criminal proceeds." Those charges also come with some potentially hefty prison sentences, including a maximum 20 years for conspiracy to commit racketeering, five years for copyright infringement, 20 years for money laundering, and five years for each of the substantive charges of criminal copyright infringement.

(AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite, File)

(AP) ? When Megaupload executives arrive in court to answer charges that they orchestrated a massive online piracy scheme, they'll be backed by a prominent lawyer who has defended Bill Clinton against sexual harassment charges and Enron against allegations of corporate fraud.

Washington attorney Robert Bennett said Friday that he will represent the company, which was indicted in federal court in Alexandria Thursday on copyright infringement and other charges.

The U.S. government shut down Megaupload's file-sharing website on Thursday, alleging that the company facilitated illegal downloads of copyrighted movies and other content. Seven individuals ? including the company's founder, who had his name legally changed to Kim Dotcom ? were also charged. Dotcom and three others were arrested in New Zealand; three others remain at large.

New Zealand police raided several homes and businesses linked to Dotcom and seized guns, millions of dollars and nearly $5 million in luxury cars, officials said.

In Hong Kong, where Megaupload is based, customs officials said they seized more than $42.5 million in assets. They said the company operated out of luxury hotel space costing more than $12,000 a day, and they seized high-speed servers and other equipment from the offices.

The shutdown and indictment generated headlines around the world in part because of the size and scope of Megaupload's operation. Sandvine, Inc., a Canadian company that provides equipment to monitor Internet traffic, said the website alone accounted for about 1 percent of traffic on U.S. cable and DSL lines. The site is even more popular in many foreign countries.

Bennett said that "we intend to vigorously defend against these charges" but declined to comment on the case in detail.

Bennett is best known for serving as President Bill Clinton's attorney when he was accused of sexual harassment by Paula Jones. He has also represented Defense Secretaries Clark Clifford and Caspar Weinberger.

Megaupload was no stranger to accusations that its website existed for the sole purpose of mass copyright breach. Before its website was taken down, Megaupload offered a more detailed defense of its operations, claiming in a statement that such accusations are "grotesquely overblown."

The company said it had a clear, easy-to-follow procedure if movie studios or other copyright holders saw that their products were being illegally shared on Megaupload, and said that it responded to those "takedown notices" as required by law.

"Of course, abuse does happen and is an inevitable fact of life in a free society, but it is curbed heavily and efficiently by our close cooperation with trusted takedown partners. It is just unfortunate that the activities of a small group of 'black sheep' overshadows the millions of users that use our sites legitimately every day," the statement said.

Indeed, sites like megaupload.com, known as cyberlockers, can fulfill legitimate needs and are used every day by people looking for an efficient way to share or transfer large files that can't easily be sent by email.

In their indictment, however, federal prosecutors offered a detailed glimpse of the internal workings of the website. They allege that Megaupload was well aware that the vast majority of its users were there to illegally download copyrighted content.

According to the indictment, in a 2008 email chat session, two of the alleged coconspirators exchange messages, with one saying "we have a funny business . . . modern days pirates :)" and the other responds, "we're not pirates, we're just providing shipping services to pirates :)".

In another instance, one of the defendants allegedly laments in colorful language that an episode HBO's "The Sopranos" has been uploaded to site, but the dialogue is in French, limiting its appeal.

In fact, prosecutors allege that the entire website was specifically designed to encourage piracy. The website provided cash bonuses to users who uploaded content popular enough to prompt mass downloads ? such content was almost always copyrighted material.

Stefan Mentzer, an intellectual property partner with the White and Case law firm in New York, said it's likely that Megaupload will try to argue at least two defenses: One is that its service qualifies as a so-called "safe harbor" under Digital Millennium Copyright Act ? the federal law governing copyright infringement ? if they can show, for instance, that they had no actual knowledge that infringing material was on their system. Another possible defense would be jurisdictional ? specifically, that a case can't be brought in the Eastern District of Virginia against a Hong Kong-based company like Megaupload without evidence that they directed criminal activity related to the district.

But Mentzer said both defenses would be a challenge, given the evidence that prosecutors appear to have collected.

"The Department of Justice doesn't just cavalierly file these lawsuits," Mentzer said.

Federal prosecutors have made Internet piracy a priority in the last decade, especially in the Eastern District of Virginia, which can claim jurisdiction over many such cases because large portions of the Internet's backbone ? servers and other infrastructure ? are physically located in northern Virginia's technology corridor.

The vast majority of those cases have resulted in guilty pleas and prison time. On Friday, a day after announcement of the Megaupload case, a federal judge sentenced Matthew David Howard Smith, 24, of Raleigh, North Carolina, to 14 months in prison for his role in founding a website called NinjaVideo. That site was one of many shut down in 2010, at a time when it facilitated nearly 1 million illegal downloads a week.

NinjaVideo was what prosecutors called a "linking site" to Megaupload. Casual users of Megaupload would be unable to find popular movies and TV shows on the site without the proper links. Sites like NinjaVideo allowed users to easily search for the desired movies or music and provided the links that enabled them to download the content from Megaupload.

The other co-founder of NinjaVideo, Hana Beshara, was sentenced earlier this month to 22 months in prison. While she admitted guilt, she portrayed herself as a sort of Robin Hood of the online world, stealing from greedy movie studios to provide entertainment downloads to the masses in the form of free films, TV shows, videogames and music.

While the legal defense for piracy may be difficult, accused Internet pirates clearly have their supporters, as evidenced by the millions of people who use their sites as well as the response to Thursday's Megaupload shutdown. Within hours of the indictment being unsealed, the loose affiliation of hackers known as Anonymous caused temporary shutdowns of the Justice Department website as well as the websites of the Motion Picture Association of America and other industry groups that support a tougher piracy laws.

It could be months before the criminal case against Megaupload gets underway. The four defendants arrested in made an initial appearance in a New Zealand court Friday and are scheduled to make a second appearance on Monday. Authorities have said it could take a year or more to bring them to the U.S. if they fight extradition.

O.J. Simpson faces foreclosure on Florida home

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- As if being in prison wasn't bad enough. O.J. Simpson's life has taken another sour turn: He's now facing foreclosure on his Kendall, Fla. home.

Simpson's mortgage lender, JP Morgan Chase (JPM, Fortune 500), initially filed its intention to foreclose on the former football star's four-bedroom, 4,000-square-foot home in September, according to court records from the Miami-Dade County Clerk's office.

Simpson's attorney, Leonardo Starke, filed a motion to dismiss the foreclosure filing in November. But, according to a person familiar with the matter, the bank is moving forward with its legal proceedings.

Starke did not return messages seeking comment.

Simpson, who is serving a prison sentence of up to 33 years for a 2007 armed robbery and kidnapping in Nevada, has not made a mortgage payment since 2010, according to the source.

Simpson paid $575,000 in 2000 for the house, getting a first and second mortgage to pay for it, according to public records. He refinanced both loans in 2003 with a $592,000 loan through Washington Mutual, the savings and loan that was later aquired by Chase.

Since the house now has an assessed worth of $478,401, according to county records, and he now owes more than $700,000, including penalties and fees, according to the source, Simpson might want to walk away from the home.

Simpson was acquitted of the 1994 murder of his wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman in 1995, but still owes some $33.5 million to the Goldman estate, a sum won in a civil judgment brought against Simpson by Fred Goldman, Ron's father.

Other than the motion to dismiss, Simpson does not seem to have taken any other steps to keep the home.

In Florida, lenders must offer borrowers in default the chance to save their homes through a Residential Mortgage Foreclosure Mediation Program but, Simpson was unable to attend the mediation. As court records state, there was "borrower non-participation with RMMP."?To top of page

Essential protein for the formation of new blood vessels identified

Wednesday, January 18, 2012

New research explains how cells regulate their bonds during the development of new blood vessels. For the first time, the role of the protein Raf-1 in determining the strength of the bond between cells has been shown. Manuela Baccarini's group at the Max F. Perutz Laboratories, a joint venture of the University of Vienna and the Medical University of Vienna, shows if Raf-1 is not present, the cells cannot stick together and the formation of new blood vessels is inhibited. This discovery may one day lead to new approaches to cancer treatment.

Angiogenic sprouting, the process by which new blood vessels grow from existing vessels, is a double-edged sword. It enables the cardiovascular system to develop in the embryo, and is vital for tissue regeneration in adults. But it also supplies growing tumors with nutrients and oxygen.

Angiogenesis is an example of collective cellular migration. Cells move as a group, held together by connections called adherens junctions. For the cells to move, they have to make and break these connections continuously. If the junctions are too stiff, they will not be able to move at all, but if they are too weak, the groups of cells will break apart. How this mechanism is controlled was unknown.

The mechanism has now been uncovered by Manuela Baccarini's group at the Max F. Perutz Laboratories, a joint venture of the University of Vienna and the Medical University of Vienna, who investigate cell signaling. They have established a crucial role for Raf-1, a multi-purpose signal transducer, in this process.

"The real breakthrough came when we were able to use video microscopy on the developing vessels in vitro," explains the paper's first author Reiner Wimmer. "We realized that the cells without Raf-1 were actively migrating, but only as single cells. They could not migrate in a group."

The meaning of this discovery became clear in further experiments: the role of Raf-1 is to bring the new adherens junctions a kinase they need for the remodeling of the cytoskeleton. This means that Raf-1 is fine-tuning the bonds between the migrating cells by causing the local remodeling of the cell's cytoskeleton.

As the process of angiogenic sprouting is necessary for the growth of tumors, this new discovery may one day be applied to produce cancer therapies to target Raf-1 and the other parts of this control mechanism, thereby disrupting the environment of the tumor.
